I was asked recently at a radio operators course where can you dump an old 121.5MHz EPIRB when replacing it for the new 406MHz as of 1st Feb next year.

Well according to the current MSQ "Recreational Boating & Fishing in Qld" booklet page 31 - Beacon disposal can now be done at Battery World stores around Australia.

It's a free service!

Don't forget you have to register the new 406 when you buy one. Also if one comes with the secondhand boat you buy, make sure you get ownership transfer with the beacon along with the boat from the previous owner.

check out AMSA (Australian Maritime Safety Authority) http://beacons.amsa.gov.au

top bit of info qf. i replaced my 121.5 with another 121.5 just over a year ago (i don't go far offshore so milked the system for another coupla years for less than half the 406 price) i contacted vmr and was told to remove the batteries and then dispose of the unit in the rubbish bin. the batteries are sitting in the shed at home because i didn't know what to do with them and now i do, cheers.
