Hi Gang
I just got back from the north coast of NSW after seeing my parents.. Dad is unwell and they are not sure how long he'll be round for :-/ . Anyway, he gave me his pride and joy as a sort of "see you enjoy it inheritence"thing.. a 12 foot tinny and a 6Hp Johno. Both Mid 80s and low hours.

Boat and trailer are fine and made it up to Brissy, but when I started the motor it doesn't seem to be getting any water through the pump.. None came out of the tell tale, nor the exhaust outlet..We ran it in a garbage tin of water, not muffs.

Does anyone know of a good service guy on the Northside of Brisbane ? I am only a few Kms from Northside Marine and am happy to use them, but I was thinking if anyone is good at this sort of thing and keen for some $$ then I would be happy to give them the work. It seems it needs a new impellor ?

Please let me know by return, or by PM ? ;)

Thanks:-*

Russell

they are a pretty simple Motor and probably a good start off point to learn a bit about Motors (as long as you are a bit mechanical of course), but almost any Dealer can do that for you, did the Motor get hot?? it could just be that something has blocked the tell tale! so best to make sure you need some repairs before you get any done.

As Noelm said check nothings blocking the teltail it may have been some weed or something got sucked up in there or you may need a new impellor.

Thanks guys.
Yes, the motor heated up very quickly and I was aware of that thanks to an earlier thread on this site about such things.. I took the hoses off and wiggled a piece of wire into the inlet and the outlet from the head where the hoses attach, but the flow was still very weak.. This motor has been in his shed for some time.

I would try to fix it myself, I did a water pump and gear lever linkage in an old 72 model 6hp evinrude I had years ago, but to be honest nowdays its simply a matter of not having any time.

Cheers

I cleared my similar vintage Johnno 15hp telltale by blowing some compressed air up the pipe. Worked a treat to clear it. However, if the motor has been sitting idle for a long time, it is likely the impeller has become brittle, or useless. Apparently they break down faster by not being used than by actually being used often, so my guess is the impeller needs changing.

Thanks Bait Thrower, I'll give that a go.. I did use a hose (NSW mid north coast = no water restrictions..)
I'd consider having a go at it if I could get my hands on a workshop manual..
Anyone got one to loan ?

Umm i'm planning on getting a workshop manual for my Johnno in the next 2 weeks. Would probably also cover your model too if it is similar year. If you can hold off for a week or two I might be able to relay you some pertinent information.
