I have a Haines Formula 233, old but still a weapon. It has an outboard well not a pod, also has good quality trim tabs. I currently have 2 x 200 HP 2s Mercury Black Max's on it. Does anyone have any idea what these motors would weight. These motors are currently using about 120 lts/hr at about 4000rpm so am thinking about trading them in. My current thoughts are 2 x 150hp ETEC's or 1 x 300 hp Suzuki. Having read some forums in the US they say that these boats are better or should I say more balanced being powered by twins, I do however like the idea of one simple motor and not really interested in inboards. I use the boat to go from Manly to Moreton Island and back and some fishing as well. Any suggestions guys?

PS My mates want to put 2 x 350hp's on it but I think that 700hp on the back of a 7m boat is a bit excesive!

G'Day

I would think that they would be in the vicinity of 180~200 kg's a piece.

406 lbs

My 200 Opti L/S is 232kg's

120l/hr, scary stuff at $1.30/L

Classic hull though.

Cheers

Mate - great hull - 23 degrees isnt it? If it were me and I wanted simple I would get a precision blend Yamaha 200 hp V6 Carb...they still sell them new. Or if you wanted the extra grunt for well offshore then say twin 150 Yammy - another option would be twin 130 V4 Yammy carbed - very nice motor and low weight for twins. You cant get much better in terms of reliability and purchase value.

Or maybe twin 150 Opti's?, about 40 - 50 litres an hour, would be a great rig.

A couple of guys on fi%$net are right into the formula's, worth prowling there for some info.

Cheapest option would be 2 200 V6 EFI Mercurys....they are only around the 14 k mark each brand new and a bullet proof motor

The weigh 196 kg....200 yammie are 202 kg...115/130 yammie are 178 kg

...shows how understressed and solid the Yammy V4 is when producing 115-130 hp at that weight...:)

BTW the Yammy 200 carbed V6 is 198kg

If you want some second hand OPTIMAX 150-175hp (very late model off net boats with say 1400 hours on them) see Brian at Wondall Rd Marine at Wynnum

Mate, I would over power not under power that old weapon. Like all old Haines they need power. Like Vitamin Sea, I have 19C with 200 Optimax, uses 70l/hr at 5700rpm, but 25 at 3500. Twin 200's seem pretty common, even 4 strokes. I certainly wouldn't go below twin 150's, you could be disapointed. I think Etec, Opti or 4 stroke is way to go. Cheers Pete.

True Mick

But then the fuel usage would not be a hell of a lot different to what Bandit has now?

As the boats tabed why not go one of these! At 365 kg it wouldn't be to heavy for the 223 and wouldn't it go with that amount of torque!!!

Mick

When I was looking there was about 5K in it for the 200, I to had to think long and hard.

Ended up with the Opti for resale and less day to day expense, etc, had a thread in here about it

The formula's dont like alot of weight on the bum, if using 2 motors you will need to do a hull extension.
Podding twin motors on a formula can stuff a good hull.

have a look at 300 verado more punch lighter and better fuel ecom than the yamie but the yamie is a little bit fast at the on the top end
if going for twins why not look at the L4 200 verado lightest four stroke on the market and merc throttle and gauges are the best on the market speicaly in multiple engine setups
