Hello everyone,
I am loomking for a small motor for my 12 foot fiberglass dinghy i got recently but cannot seem to find a outboard within the usual 15 year olds budget . i have saved a bit of birthday and christmas money and just want a motor specifically 5,6 hp .The boat i bougt also came with an old 2hp evinrude but the spark plug is loose and the pull start is stuffed, does start after a few pulls but still i think i need a bigger motor. i also am in need of a sounder, i did have a garmin fishfinder 120 but my dog chewed all cords so i only have a screen :-[ .It would be greatly appreciated if someone could tell me what size motor is appropriate and what would be most reliable. Thankyou:D

Well, my dinghy is close to 12ft and I have a Suzi 5HP on the back at present. With two adults and fishing gear aboard, she doesn't plane. Kinda gets close but not close enough. I get about 10km/h with the tide and about 6 against at half throttle. It gets you there ok, just takes a bit longer. I'm looking to upgrade to a 9.9 or a light weight 15hp. On the cheaper side you will only get older motors. But having said this, my '83 model suzi 5hp still goes great guns and is reliable. It was well looked after by previous owner. A new 9.9 will set you back about $2k for a name brand 2-stroke.

Hi mate,

I'd suggest a 6hp outboard motor would be a good choice for your boat.

I would be looking through the trading post, and trying to buy as late a model engine as possible. If you had $700-800 to spend you might be able to find something later than a 2000 model.

There are some bargains out there, but I would take someone with you with a bit of mechanical knowledge to check it out for you.

cheers

Hi mate around a 9.9 would be ideal then you could get it on a plane maybe a used yamaha or even a little toey something made in japan is the way to go.

Hi BB33,

good luck with your search.

Some further information on what you are after might help narrow down the options.

You did not mention what your budget was? nor details of your 12 footer? I see it in the photo, but how much does it weigh?, I assume it is a fair bit heavier than a tinny. You seem to have a trailer for it!?, so where are you located and intending to use it? that might also give us some more clues as to what you need.

You are only a year or so away from being able to get your boat license, so I assume this will be a stop gap motor until then?

Cheers

Hey DJ
my budget would be around $300-$500 as just yea what you said want a small motor before i can upgrade next year. i am located in the redlands shire so would intend to use it in moreton bay when she isnt too rough or up a few rivers and creeks around. It does weigh a fair bit but i am not sure of the exact weight, i could estimate maybe 100kgs-150. All i know is that it is a pongrass yabby. So am just looking for a motor that will do the job but will not exeed my price limits lol.

Righto BB,

that is going to be a challenge, but you never know if you don't try. Leisure Marine have a 6hp Mercury, they are asking $650 so that's not too far away;

Will keep an eye out for something in your price range. If you have transport to get you around , it would probably be worthwhile have a bit of a sticky around the boat yards to see what they have in the way of used outboards.

Gidday mate im putting a 15 hp moter on my 12 foot fiberglass dinghy sometime in the next few week, im seriously thinking of a brand new 15 hp 2 stroke zuke. But i might put something else on it yet. How long before your 16 mate i decided to wait a couple of months till i turned 16 and save up for that couple of months and get a good reliable moter with enouph power to get me on the plane.

cheers tassie JR

Makes me wonder why they don't have motors like a 9.9 hp but re-propped with a propeller that will make it perform more like a 6 hp just for the young guys who can't get a license because of age. That way when they can legally get a license they can simply rip the prop off and put a normal one on and get some speed out of it. Would be a damn lot cheaper than repowering with a new motor. Anyway, I was going to suggest to have a look at the Tohatsu 2 stroke motors because generally they are as reliable as anything on the market but their sell prices are normally substantially lower. A second hand Tohatsu in around the 6 hp rating you may be able to get real cheap. Good luck!

Something for you to consider is that quite a few outboards have a standard motor and they change the horsepower by changing carbies ( 6 hp and 8hp evinrude./johnos)
Some tohatsus have a restrictor plate in the carby and you also have to change main jet.
Cheers
