HI ALL

When you have finished drill holes in a painted ally boat do you put any coating on the hole to help protect it

Yeah mate you can either prime and top coat the hole or you can get a spray similar to battery terminal protector to stop the salt water getting at the bare metal. What ever you do cover up the bare metal.

put some masking tape on the spot where the holes going to go before the drilling.
It saves the paint a lot.

Duralac is the go, a tube is quite expensive, last one I bought around $25 or $30 by memory, but will last you for many years. A must have for all alloy boat owners!

As mentioned by many, Duralec is the purpose designed jointing compound when installing dissimilar metals.

Many poeple forget about the area behind the fastener however and the jointing compound cannot fulfill its intended function properly.

So, drill your hole carefully, and install wet with duralec including the back face.

Use plenty and then wipe off any access with a rag moistened with turps.

If you have easy access I would follow up in about a week and cover the blind side up with Sikaflex.

Sure it sounds like a bit of work but it is nothing like the amount of work to repair blistering paintwork.

What are you drilling?

uh oh!

i.e I recently drilled a hole and placed a rod holder in it, just using lanoline to oil up around the fresh hole I drilled in my alloy painted top side.
I didn’t think this will be affected by any environment, should I purchase some Duralec and pull the rod holder off and place some compound before re-installing.

I only did this 2 weekends ago. uh oh!

I use duralec on my yacht mast. I also tend to use a piece of plastic from an ice cream container between the fitting and the mast. Also, if you can use a blind aluminium rivet instead of a bolt this will prevent the need for jointing compound on the other side.
