Sounds like Merc rack steering.

To the best of my knowledge there are no other wheels to suit the square shaft.

Mercury MAY have a wheel to suit, I have a feeling they do but it wouldn't be cheap.

Failing that buy yourself a new helm (about $100) or get a new steering kit (about $250).

Could you post some photos? Does it look like it'd be too hard to modify another wheel to fit?
