Thansk for link. The differnces ar ento that obvious on the link so I contacted ICOM by phone.

They told me the M422 does not have NMEA I/O - I was suprised to hear this.

The M505 also has a larger dial and can scroll through channles using dial.

The screen on the M505 is also much larger and clearer.

The M505 also has a scrambler whereby they M422 does not.

Footprint not much different.

Splash i persnoally believe the question you should be asking is what features these 2 units have that you would use incomparison to the m304 ,i am struggling with the features on this unit let alone any others that the 2 you have mentioned have. Why not save some money and just buy the 304 unless the other units are more powerful but i think they will be 25watt as well ,i know you are a bit isolated up there but i am sure the 304 will give you all you want but thats just my opinion ...matt

Mate, can you explain what this actually means and what I am really missing out on by having the M422 http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/undecided.gif.

if you look at the product sheet for the 422 it lists the nmea i/o formats as rmc, gga, gns, gll.

i dont know what icom were telling you but it is clearly nmea compatible .

For what it is worth cause I am no electronics wiz, I went through the process not long ago but quietly. As a result have trouble understanding why 80% of the VHF buyers would need more than the icom 3 series, the rx/tx specs were identical to the 4 series, what special features it doesn't have most will never notice or miss, it's cheaper, and due to a few less features it is more user friendly, these icoms can be a right pain to operate after 2 weeks not looking at them, that is without going to bed with the manual the night before.

Icom every time though for the quality IMO.

cheers fnq

The 422 definately does have NMEA I/O as I installed one in my boat and its connected to my Navman Tracker and displays the Lat/Long on the radio screen.

looking at the website:
the 522 has a larger display that can show the lat/long continuously, be it yours or that of another parties.
the 422 shows it scrolling
