Hi everyone ,
Thought I'd share my latest 'boat project'.:D
Recipe :
- Take one 12V boat anchor winch & store in shed for 2yrs (or so) because it's to hard to wire the "new car" & it's too easy to be stolen from the trailer.(winch-2)
- Make a "drum" with a SS axle.(winch -4). Bolt it together (motor is inside 100mm tube, three 10mm S/S rods actually determine the width (spaced around motor).
- Sort out gears so that a resonable reduction is achieve, about 80:1 Place on "side plates" (winch -8) .This was actually the first step in the recipe.
- Place on boat & wire to battery, Fuse, overload, relay recommended ( use those supplied with original winch,. (winch - 10, - 12 & -14).
The drum holds about 150mtrs. of 10mm rope, I had to remake the clutch mechanism because I stuffed up and made the 'axle' about 30mm too short :-[
Except for the drum axle, nuts & bolts etc. this is all aluminium, it would be much better if all S/S but construction was on a limited budget.

P.S. No I am not going into mass production::)

Mick,
Yep looked at them & looked at the price ! (this started with a $99 trailer winch )
Daz,
If there were to be anymore it would be in S/S. I already had the ally.
Chimo, Rodnreal THANKS

Found this old post while doing a search on anchor winches. It looks alot larger than the Muir and Stressfree drum winches. Frank is it still working well for you ? Have you had any problems with it ?

Gavin,
Yep still works, one day I'll have to beef up the clutch engagement (which was copied off the original) which I think will one day fail. But you know "if it aint broke..." besides I've other things to keep me busy.
The only problem is getting the rope to lay evenly, usaully this is done wearing a glove, I have mates that love it & some that hate it.

nice piece of engineering, but why? Isn't it much easier and cheaper to just drive the anchor off using an anchor yanka or similar system and pull the rope in by hand?

I would like a winch as it is clean and out of the way. I dont want rope , chain , anchor and ball on the floor of my boat when moving in chop with kids in the boat, A winch would make it easier to move from spot to spot when the fish arnt biting (we have all experienced that).
How do Muir and Sressfree get around the problem of the rope laying evevly?
There must be a way or poeple would be screaming about it after paying 2 grand plus for a winch.

Jeremy - Yes it would be easier except I like building things, have you tried using the ball when anchored close to a reef? is another reason for the winch.
Gavin - Apparently they do'nt wind on evenly. What makes mine worse than most is the roller on the front of the boat has a deep groove (to hold the boat nose against the anchor rope) This tends to hold the rope in the centre of the winch so it does bunch up if not guided. I am half heartedly working on a "level wind" for it but it's a low priority ATM.

Hey Frank like your work !! ....
Just a thought re the recovery .... when we run the winches out on helicopters for a service and the like, in the main they have a simple guide system that just travels across back and forth.
Again if you have a look at the mechanism on a baitcaster reel they are pretty close to the idea.
As with most good inventions, K.I.S.S. Keep It Simple Stupid ... is the golden rule hey !! Again well done ... ;D

I would have thought it was obvious??
Now, I'm no scientist, but I would say it's so he doesn't have to lift it by hand?
Great work Frank.. I'm a big fan of building it myself too, and have learnt heaps over the years from doing just that.

Frank if you do put a level wind on it maybe you should patent it . You could always sell the rights to your idea at a later date for a substantial profit. Im sure there would be a few companies interested , i can think of a few and im sure theres many more.

.
Not only that, but you don't know much about the anka yanka either do you? The drive off system does the lifting for you.
I can see the point about being close to a reef tho.

Thanks for the comments Guys !
If ever I get a level wind based on the KISS principle I'll post photos (or I could patent it & live off the earnings ?. Then again .... )

Mate you could pull the plug out with that thing and we may all have to walk home;D ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Frank just sell the rights on the condition that they keep the price in reach of average fishos so we can all enjoy it sooner rather than later.
Cheers Gavin
