Been getting into the cross wraps lately, with all the rain we've been getting down here, it's a good chance to get stuck in.

I can't take credit for the pattern, it's one I saw on rodbuilding.org and down loaded. So I had to wing my version of it from the photo.

No resin or preserver on yet & still havn't finished the trim bands.

Is it all Madeira?
Looks like about three light blues and a metallic?

I have to sit down and have a proper crack at one of these one day.

Do you burnish them in any way, or does that risk upsetting it to much?

Maybe you could give me some pointers at the RBW.

On my wraps, Owen, I burnish them and find it does not harm it in any way and in fact enhances the end product.

I cheat. I print the pattern out and stick it on the blank and then mark the points off the pretty picture..Yep, I'm a slacker ::)

I think I was very lucky to get most of it in on the first attempt, as I had no idea of the circumference of the original rod.

I calculated the angle of the lay-out threads at 40 degrees, over 23cm that would give me around 5 butterflys.

The circumference at the butt end of the wrap was 4.8cm and the other was 3.8.

In this instance I used 'C', on a smaller rod definately 'A' to get the entire thing in.

The number of threads per pass has to be as close to the same all the way through or increase in regular & even amounts, other wise the 'horizon'...if that's what you want to call it will look a bit untidy...well, a lot untidy actually.

Yes, burnishing is important to achieve a nice even finish.... I havn't done much to this wrap yet, will do so in the next few days if I get the time.

Almost forgot!!!!! the thread is speed.

I am trying to use it up, as I much prefer gudebrod & maderia brands.

Also a question for you.

Do you mix Maderia with other brands?

If we are lucky we can knock that wrap over in a day. So bring the rod along if you like.

I've only done that once with the design threads.
I didn't have any white madeira when I did the American Eagle weave, so I used size C speed. Huge difference in diameter.
For the most part I got away with it because the speed could be stretched and "thinned" when I packed & rolled it, but in some spots it forced gaps between the adjacent threads because of the different sizes.
I don't think I'd do it again. I was just too impatient to wait for the right stuff.

I'd happily mix an A size thread and Madeira though.

On the wrap thread it doesn't matter because that's usually larger than the design threads to account for stretching under tension.

I use CP on everything now, so that side of it's not an issue to me.

I don't know how it would look on a wrap though.
