as suggested im chasing advice on how to extend a butt section of a rod. i have a small 5'6" ultra light blank that has a cork grips, reel seat and butt cap already on but theres a problem, i hate it and want to scrap it for an extension in the form of a split grip. so has anyone done this before or have any links to help. weight shouldnt be a problem because i built a couple of the same rods up for mates and they were super light so a bit of extra weight at the back end wont even be noticed.
i have some old graphite fly rod sections that can be cut up and used as the extension but i would like to know what have others used to join it.
thanks for your help

I have a factory built rod here somewhere that I was gong to rebuild with a bit of another blank glued over the bottom end of the blank.
The grips and reel seat was put over the join and the extension.
ie the extension went over the original rod not into it.
Gees I'm hopeless at explaining things :(

I know it doesn't show the process, but this rod here is extended...

Blank is a 6'6" UL Angler Pacific that I extended to 7'2" by sticking a piece of Silstar Prograph up the guts. I used thread on the insertion point until I got the taper right and epoxied it up there.
The reel seat sits directly over the end point of the primary blank. As the blanks were different colours I just filled in the split with a little decoration in black and gold.
Works really really really well.
General consensus at rodbuilding.org is that extensions should aim to be completed through using an external sleeve - but in your case that would mean reguiding etc.
Stuart has a great knowledge of blank manufacture, hopefully he will be able to give some insight as to how a blank should be extended 'the proper way'
