View Full Version : Running in Period for new 2-strokes

Just a quick couple of questions really. Having never had a new 2-stroke outboard motor before I am in the dark about a couple of things. Firstly I was told to run 25:1 oil mix during the run in period but they neglected to tell me just how long I need to do this for and secondly how long does it take to run a 2-stroke motor in?
I would like to start experiencing the normal 50:1 mix because I am finding that the motor is fouling up with oil too fast at the moment.

Thanks,

Poodroo

What does the manual say??
Or ring the dealer back and ask them.
They do the guarantee so if you do what they ask they can't question your method then. Can they??

Yours a self oiler and you are adding extra as premix? consider doing the premix portion with a more super dooper Merc/Mariner 2 st oil for the remainder of the run -in.

cheers fnq

About 3 years ago I bought a new rig with a 115 2stk self oiler Merc. All the dealer told me to do was for the first full tank of fuel to throw a litre or two of 2stk oil into the fuel tank. After that ops normal.
That was nothing like 25:1 though!

Okay the only booklet I was given does not have the info I need. Yes it is a 40 Mercury with oil injection which runs at 50:1 so I add a premix 50:1 as well. Have been recommended Quicksilver oil so that is what I will be using. I will need to ask the dealer when I get the chance to see them later this week hopefully.

Cheers for the replies,

My 50hp yamaha manual says to run it at the 25:1 ratio for the 1st 10 hours. and specifically dont run it at max speed for long periods. Alter your speed up and down to wear it in properly. I think this reduces the amount of shine that develops in the cylinder

My 25 merc, I was told 25:1 for the first tank then 50:1 there after, start putting round first then gradually increase rpm as the thank gets lower, dont sit on the same revs for prolonged periods and lay off the full throtte till the 2nd tank.

2nd this.

***my Merc Manual said the following***
0 - 10mins no more than 1500rpm
upto 1 hour after 10 mins - no more than 2500rpm.
between 1 and 2 hours of operation, no more than 3500rpm.
between 2 and 3 hours of operation, no more than 4500rpm.
up to 10 hours full throttle not going above 5500 for 1 minute every 30 minutes.

unfortunately my boat doesn't have a rev guage so i went by boat speed... 4knots for teh 10 mins..... 14knots for the next hour.. 18 knots for the third...
longest time i ran the higher speeds was about 15 - 20mins out to my fishing location.. also the above speeds are based on what i was told teh max speed of my engine would be... 40kts. i played it safe at 35kts.

hope this helps.

Just bought a new tohatsu about 5 days ago pretty much the same as local guy... First 10 hours run in at 25:1
0 - 10 mins idling
f0r 1 hour.. throttle open less then 1/2 way.... 3000 rpm
1-2 hours... throttle open less then 3/4..... upto 4000 rpm , a full throttle run is allowed for 1 min, every 10 mins
2-10 hours throttle open 3/4 of the way... 4000rpm , a full throttle run is allowed for 2 mins, every 10 min.

so pretty much the same

cheers dave

I just finished running in my 40hp suzuki.
2 tanks at 25:1, then on to 50:1. No full throttle
till after 2 tanks and keep revs up and down.

I always wack a little extra oil in the fuel when I
am mixing - just to be sure.

I hope it's not too late to find out about running periods when you read the above.
How many hours up on her now??

When i got my boat new from theo they put in the same amount of 2 stroke oil as you use in a pre mix in a 60lt tank , i never ran any extra after that just rely on the oil injection after that i would say yours would be the same i only use quicksilver premium 2 stroke oil in mine and have no smoke issues or problems when trolling lures for hours on end . Nice to see you out there sunday that was a test for the new boat ,looked great on the water seemed to handle it well from what i saw yesterday was glassed of all the way to morton . Enjoy your new beast ......matt

Thanks. I have been doing pretty much that although I have to estimate revs seeing as they didn't provide me with a tacho. I have enquired about a tacho so there is a good chance I will have one installed. I was really just wondering how long I have to run the 25:1 oil mix which has been answered thanks. I have run two tanks now on 25:1 and have one more premix all ready to go for the next trip so that will make 3 tanks at 25:1 so I should be safe after that to run the normal 50:1.

Thanks again,

Poodroo
