Hi Scotty

This how I would repair your rod

1. remove the bottom grip down to the rod blank using a stanley knife but be careful not to cut into the blank.

2. ensure the blank is clean use sandpaper.

3. measure the outside diameter end of the blank.

4. purchase a new grip with an inside hole diameter a bit smaller than the blank.

5. at this point you need to remember that the blank is tapered from rear to tip and you will need to pack the blank with masking tape so that the grip will fit snuggly leave about an inch between each masking tape wrap to allow the alderite to adhere to the grip and the blank.

PM me if you want any help. I have done this repair before.

Ken

Would you not have to take all the guides of first to be able to push the grips down or is there another way of putting grips on?

I've made a few different sized aluminum tapers to fit into the base of the rod so the bottom grip can be slid up onto the blank from the wrong end but the grip fits exactly the same way as it would if slipped down from the top.
Pain in the u-know-what trying to slip a grip from the bottom if it's a snugger then a snug-as-a-bug fit.
Works well ;D

So obviously it can be done with some effort.
I just could not image how you fit something that is smaller which has minimal give over something bigger so simply.

So Scott do you want to share your thingy's with us to show what aids you use?

Here ya go Sandy old mate.
The first bit of the taper is about 3 degrees and the last bit (next to the blank itself) is about 1.5 degrees.
I just use tape to take up the slop in the blank and this also allows the gismo to be inserted into blanks with different tapers. ie more tape down the bottom and not as much up the top.
Works pretty well

This process becomes dead set easy if you have an air compressor with a reasonable sized air tank. As mentioned above remove the old grip completely leaving bare graphite or glass, sand the exposed area so it is not all glossy and buy the right sized grip (2-3mm smaller inside diameter than the butt of the blank)
Prep the rod blank with epoxy glue (araldite 24 hr) pour a bit of paint thinners inside the grip and slosh it around and drain it out. While the grip is still wet inside you put the end against the but of a firmly held rod butt and the airline in the other end air pressure will expand the grip and you forcibly push it into place keeping the air in the back end until it is full on the rod. Takes about 2 seconds and a reasonable amount of air. If you want to make the process easier get a bit of timber and plug the back of the blank and taper it down with a sander to create a ramp to get a start with. Helps a lot for the start but usually not essential.

Jack.

Thanks Scott and Jack both make sense and workable.

If you use an EVA grip it is pretty easy to stretch on, I had a grip chewed up on an old but good surf rod, I just went down to Haymans and bought a bit of 35mm heat shrink, put it on and heated it - new tight waterproof grip. Cost a bomb though, but it was a front grip, and was big enough to go over the reel seat easily enough.
