Hi Guys I am thinking of doing a rod for my old man for his birthday in Feb, he would like a rod for chasing snapper/bottom bouncing, overhead reel. can anyone help me on a Good ( not ridiculous, but cost not really a factor) rod blank, and what guides are best for this type of rod ( sorry for all the questions I generally only build split cane flyrods)
Thanks

Line weight?
15kg Sabre 655h
24kg Sabre 6455XH
Blanks these days will be around the hundred dollars or so abd being E-Glass they will take a lot of abuse. Both are short stroker style jig rods suitable for bottom bashing to livebaiting or trolling.
Jack.
G'day Walldog,
I make up a few different rods for customers with the same type of fishing you have in mind. If length is no real concern, then the Seeker 210 is a great blank however for a shorter blank around the 7' mark, then I would try the Calstar 210. I made the Calstar 210 up for a Penn Pro tournament angler who was using it the other day barra fishing in a comp up North and then taking it over to NZ for snapper fishing for a dvd. We had a Penn torque 300 on it with 80lb braid and we got up to 15kg of drag out of it. The rod has the balls down low but the tip is still sensitive enough to feel finicky bites. You could use alconite or silicon guides depending on the budget. Just a thought.
Cheers, Jan.

Hi Walldog,
I am building myself a bottom-bashing rod at the moment. I looked at the Calstar blanks and whilst they are really good I found them a tad fast for my liking, so I ordered a composite glass-graphite blank (Lamiglas CGBT84) and a set of fuji HNSG. I haven't taken it out yet (just finished wrapping this morning ;D) but it passes the dumbell test with flying colours!
Anyway, just another option if you want something sturdy but a lot more responsive than glass.
NB: For snapper, I'd go the L or ML (http://shop.mudhole.com/Shop-Our-Catalog/Tri-Flex-Boat-Trolling-Series)

Thanks Jan, Apologies for the slow reply, Do you know of a Calstar supplier on Oz?

G'day Walldog,
Peter at GCCR as well as Gary Howard have the Calstar blanks available. Any tackle shop close to you should be able to order them in. I can't remember if Peter has the 210's, I got a few 220's off him and they are a great blank as well. I know Gary has the 210's. I ended up using game grips for front and rear grips as well as a fuji DPSH reel seat. I like the feel of big grips on a rod like that but it comes down to personal preferences like all things. I've used BMNAG as well as MNSG guides and both are good. The last one I did was on "River to Reef" I think he calls his program and it was the black and gold marbelled rod if by chance you watched it. Anyway I hope this helps.
Cheers, Jan.

Hi Walldog,
I agree with all of the above except for one thing. IMO 8-10kg or 10-15kg is worth thinking about, just a tad lighter than the 15-25kg range perhaps.
good luck
roz.
Umm the Calstar BT210 is rated 6-10kg and the BT220 is rated 8-10kg, however you can get a lot more out of it than that. The CS T210 is rated 10-30lb and the CS T220 is 15-30lb so covers what Roz suggested as I wouldn't recommend a 15-24kg blank for what you described doing. Hope this helps.
Cheers, Jan.
