I just got a Cobra marine radio and there is cable that goes to the gps . the gps i have is a garmin76 it has got red/power , black/neg brown/data out and a white/data in wire . and the radio has red and a black(to go to the gps) . the manual says "1. bond the nmea out negative wire to the black wire of the gps interface cable.
2. bond the nmea out positive wire to the red wire of the gps interface cable ."
can anyone help me out and tell me what goes where ???
I can not figure it out as the gps red and black is possitive and negative .

thanks nico

Connect the Black to Black as this is your signal ground. In most cases you dont need to connect the Red this is normally used for power feeding for a remote GPS RX. There should be two other colours wires Yellow or Blue. These wires are connect together out of order. E.g. Blue wire of the GPS connects to the yellow wire of the radio. Send TX allways connects to the recive RX.

What type of radio did you get because some of the NMEA formats dont work. I had to get my G600D radio software updated to see the signal from the Humminbird 787.

its a cobra marine MR F55EU . the radio has positive(red) with a fuse and black for the ground , then there is a 3mm jack that plugs in for the gps and that has a red and black . so do i plug the black(from gps jack)into the ground of the gps? because the radio already has ground . im thinking the red (radio) to the brown(data out) on the gps , and the black(radio)should that go to he white (data in) or the black ground .does the radio need ground twice ? sorry it probly doesnt make sence but im trying , thanks for the help .

Can you take some Photos off of the connectors and post them. The brown and yellow would seem to the data out and in. The red might be for power feeding.
You should only need 2 wires connect to the GPS only Ground "black" and "out" Yelow or Brown which the the wire that transmits the data from the GPS.
Jaelle We are still waiting for things to happen.

there is not any yellow wires, GPS has red(power), black(ground) white(data in) and brown (data out) , radio has red (power), black (ground) and a wire with a 3mm jack(like head phones)on 1 end and a red and black on the other and that plugs into the back of the radio into the gps hole .My gps can have an external arial would that be the white /data in(do i use it) ? and the brown /data out is the 1 i should hook up to the radio maybe . I will see if i can get a clear enough pic tomorow i can not figure it out , thank you very much for your help steven.

cheers nico

Thanks. The Data out Brown and ground Black should be coonected to Black Groud in of the radio and the data in colour. If this does not work it could be a problem with the NMEA messages sent to the radio.

Here is a sample of the data that is sent from the GPS.
The sentence GPGGA most likey is the one needed. I had the same problem with the Humminbird connect to my GME 600D. GME upgraded the radio to allow for the correct data to be allowed.

Example only of RAW gps data from the Ground Black and Out connected to pin 2 and 5 of the com port of a PC

If they connect together OK look in the radio manual on which languages or versions of languages (NMEA) it accepts and make sure the GPS is putting this out.
Good luck matey :)
