View Full Version : Rating a Blank
Here is another question for the more experienced rod builders.
I have a blank (batson), it is close to 2.3 metres and I am estimating it has a medium taper.
How do I determine it's kg rating.
I would be happy to narrow it down to withing 3kg.
An uneducated guess from me would be perhaps..... 6kg, but I really have no idea at this stage.
thanks roz.
The more experienced bit is not me but...
I think each manufacturer has their own slant on things.
There's some info on power ratings here

Or you could take measurements all over and compare them here

Failing that I know that Batsons hang out on both the Rodbuilders Guild site and Bloodydecks.
I'm guessing it's a rainshadow E-glass SWB76ML - 12-20lb
I imagine you could dead lift some weights and get some idea
Hi Roz, an old basic way is......
get a set of scales, tie line to tip, load rod until reaches it's optimum working curve.
read the scales eg. whatever is on the scales is multiplied x 5 then divided x 2
say it pulled 3kgs.
take the 3 multiply x 5 & then divide x 2
3x5=15
15 divided x 2 = 7.5
rod is a 7.5kg...;D
obviously there will be other ways, that i am sure someone will post for you...
just saw Owens post, the only thing i find with the US ratings are that they are all over the shop, you can get 3 different blanks that are rated as the same, yet they are all totally different.
i built up a St Croix that was rated 12-17lb. it makes a great 5kg ( a bit over 11lbs)stick. wanted a 6kg, settled for a really nice 5kg:)
if i fished anything over that too hard it would collapse..
everyones idea of a particular rating is different, due to the way they fish. thats why god invented custom rod builders;D

I went to ATS the other day to look at some blanks. I chose the FT162 5w which can pull a jet backwards. But the guy also showed me a rod built on a similar mandril but with 7 wraps of glass. And it was much softer overall. He told me why this was so. But it mainly depends on how the glass is cut and wrapped. In the 7 wrap rod there were only a few wraps at the tip as opposed to 5 in the FT5162.
He also said that it is very difficult to predict a blank without testing it out.
Hope this info helps
Cheers
Owen

Thanks Owen,
Looking through that link I would agree that it would be near to the SWB76L or SWB76LM.
there are the remains of a sticker on the butt section with the numbers/letters S540-M, the rest is missing. I am thinking it is a model that would have been superceded.
The tip on this one is 7 where the above are both 7.5, but it's close enough for me.
I've saved those links, thanks very much,
r.
Checking their guide the rating looked to be med/fast.
