View Full Version : Making money as a fisherman

I've been curious about how one could go about selling a days catch at a market or to a shop or wholesaler.

I presume there would be a number of legalities involved...

I'm not talking trawler fishing or anything just coastal saltwater rod fishing.

Obviously big wholesalers and fish shops have theyre own suppliers but I'm curious as to whether some shops may take fish stock from other sources (like a lone fisherman).

If anyone could help me out as to how I would go about selling fish... Id be very interested to know.

Cheers.

Cheers and 'forget about it'!

DynamoJo ...... I'm just going to assume that you are a little naive on the subject. As you can see by the responses , it is totally frowned upon & Illegal.
Worst still If a licenced pro (cartel) was to find out you could end up :rifle: ..... That's not a joke by the way as some fishing areas are controlled by some very serious migrant families.
Hopefully that gives you some food for thought! ..... Nagg .

PS .... You can always go & buy a licence ( if available)

Hey DJ,

If you're a troll, take it somewhere else

If you're legit - you need to know its totally illegal to privately sell ya catch. You'll do the lot - boat, gear and you're liable to a hefty fine if you're busted. Only those with a Professional fishing license can sell fish through a Fishing co-op. There is quite a process and expense involved to get a lisence and there is limited availability

Basic licence for south east Queensland will cost you minimum $15000 for an L1 which will let you sell fish but only rocky reef fish not spanish or coral reef fish but you can't use that licence unless you have a master fishermans licence and a commercial boat licence like a manning certificate which involve doing more courses like first aid and radio all up these will cost up to a $3000 for the tafe courses but once you've passed all these you won't get your licence's until you have at least 24 months sea time on a commercial boat under the direction of a commercial fisherman, but that doesn't mean you can still sell your catch as buyers get very loyal to their suppliers and nobody wants to pay what their worth, so that will mean taking it to market for auction where you are at the mersy of bidders and you give the aution up to 20%, but if that ain't bad enough you get shit weather half the year which makes it not a very viable business as the weather dictates your catch and you don't get paid if you don't catch you lose money, but hey if you like getting battered by sea, rain fisheries under your nose every way you turn and dodging cargo ships in the night it might be your cup of tea and you can be broke like me.

As mentioned before it is illegal for recreational anglers to sell their catch. If you're looking at becoming a commercial fisherman here's a start. Not a job i'd be envious of in this day and age ;)

No flames from me mate but you really should ask yourself that if you're that uneducated in one area of fisheries regs, are you fully conversant in others? At the risk of sounding patronising, we all have to learn, but under the current climate it can be a costly learning process that could result in confiscation of all your gear including boat and car.
