I just purchesed a 1990 12' stessl with a late 80's model 7.5hp merc. This pushed the boat fine with one person but finds it hard to plane with any more.
What would be the biggest outboard i could fit, and what price would i be looking at? Second hand, nothing fancy. Preferably something that would plane with 3-4 average sized people.
Thanks, mark

What's the max. horsepower allowable on the build plate??
What's the max. number of people on the build plate??
My 13' has a 15hp and get the cook and myself going dunky dory.
MAx. for that boat would be 15 or maybe even 20hp.

Unfortunately the plate has be scratched off from having a seat there, right where it says the max hp. but the max persons is 4. It's 3.7m, i think that is 12ft?
How much would an alright, not going to just stop 15hp cost?

G'day

There's a few things you could do. Try and get in touch with stessl, maybe through makocraft and get a solid answer.

Will you be insuring the boat?

My 12' tinny has sides low like yours, and its only rated to 10hp. Most of them around the 12' mark are rated to 15hp.

Either way, you'd be pretty safe.

Anywhere between $800 and $1500 should get you a reasonable engine made this century.

ive found stessl to have higher max hp then other brands throughout all year makes and models. i had an old stacer that was 3.4m and it had a max of 20hp so i would think a 15hp on yours would go quite well.

for a decent 15hp mercury, yamaha or johnson around 1996 through to 2003 models would be between $800 to $1500. ill have my 2003 model 15hp mercury USA model for sale in the coming weeks.

Finga has hit the nail on the head
dont go buying a much used motor you end getting some one elses problems
15hp approx 3 to 5year old not particular on brands
go around the big dealers they get a lot of trade ins & some warranty if you buy private make sure you get what your paying for or have a person with outboard knowledge

Hi,
As others have said I think you would find a 15HP to be suitable.
I would think that you could find a decent one in the $1200-1500 bracket.

My preference would be Yamaha, however I traded a 15 Johnson '96' that I had owned for 5 years, and found it to be a virtually unstoppable motor.

I had mine especially fitted with electric start and power trim and tilt , because I suffer from mild cerebral palsy. I found it to make life so much easier.

Good luck with your search.

Cheers
Scott
