Hi, does anyone know which battery type I need? I know it should be around 630CCA for this size motor but getting conflicting stories on whether to go calcium or traditional lead acid. Someone told me that I need an older style lead acid, something to do with the charging rates of older alternators and the lead acid battery resistance? Would appreciate any help ta.

g'day again fender, my old 135 just had a lead acid style battery and it worked just fine mate. i never had to charge it up even when the boat sat for a month or 2 unused. bear in mind though that my trips were usually an hour or more one way though so it always got a good charge on the run home.

Fender,

As mentioned a lead acid will be fine. Also, 630CCA seems a tad extreme to me. A 5.7ltr Chev will happily play on a 350CCA battery.

By all means whack a big sucker in there if you want to but a 350CCA would be fine in my book.

The stator (alternator) in your engine will be either 9 or 15 Amp so they don't put out a lot of power.

Make sure your battery cables are in good order. Resistance test them and replace if suspect at all. Battery terminals clean and all connections tight. Replace wing nut type connections with nyloc nuts.

Cheers
