G'day fellas,

I am looking at buying a new chartplotter and i see a good bargain with a new model that runs G2 charts. Seeing the prices of G2 charts I am wondering if they are neccessary on the new machines or will the std Bluechart work fine?

Personally I do not think the imagery on offer with G2 is of any benefit to me as I will still be using it as a chartplotter.

Hi Jack,
Last year Garmin did away with using the standard Bluecharts on their chartplotters. Everything now runs off of the Bluechart G2 charts which is supposed to be an improvement over the the old Bluechart. If you need detailed marine charts for navigation and then chartplotter you are buying is compatible with the G2 then you need the G2 charts as the old Bluecharts won't work.

If you are looking at the newer models then they will run the Bluechart G2 Visions charts and they only accept SD cards so the old G2 and bluechart cards won't even fit into the slot.

Bottom line, if you need detailed marine charts for navigation then you need to buy the charts your plotter is compatible with.

Good Luck!

Thanks PP, I sort of had a notion they wouldnt be compatible entirely from a marketting point of view.

Time to keep my eye out for a 172c then.

Bluecharts are for units 2005 and prior.
G2 Bluechart are for the 2006 Model year (49x, 39x, 29x, 21xx, 22xx, 30xx, 32xx).
G2 Vision Bluechart are for the 2007 Model year (4xxx, 5xxx, 54x, 44x, 43x, 53x, 42x and 52x).

If you need a 172C there are still a couple around.
