This may sound a bit lame, but does anyone know how the Fisheries/Government or whoever define what is (say) as River instead of an Estuary or a lake, is there a size, tidal, shape?? or is it just how thay are named from whenever they are discovered? or maybe even changes according to how you want it to be described for Political/Environment reasons like if you are a Developer and want to clear some land it is "scrub" but if you are a Greenie it is a "fragile ecosystem"

Don't know who makes the decisions however I guess that they would be based on some kind of logic as per the Wikepedia example for estuary / river below.

"An estuary is a semi-enclosed coastal (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coastal) body of water (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Water) with one or more rivers (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River) or streams (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stream) flowing into it, and with a free connection to the open sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sea).[1] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Estuary#_note-0) Estuaries are often associated with high rates of biological productivity. An estuary is where the river meets the sea.
An estuary is typically the tidal mouth of a river (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/River) (aestus is Latin for tide), and estuaries are often characterized by sedimentation (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sedimentation) or silt (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Silt) carried in from terrestrial runoff and, frequently, from offshore."

HHMM Ok that seems to have that bit sorted, but how about a Creek or a River or a Lake, they can all have those attributes, it not an Earth shattering thing, it was just something that popped up the other day and got me wondering.

Dunno. Just thinking about it turned my brain into a 'fragile ecosystem':P

i agree with him,,,,,,, cause its easier and looks good

a creek is a "canal" of water that stems of a river and goes nowhere,,, ie has no outlet,,, such as the mirade of "creeks" you cross over when travelling our roads,,, (often makes me think just how many """6 mile creeks"" there are in this vast land)

a lake,,,, self explanatory,,, an entrapped body of water that has no river/creek feeding its supply,,,,,, underground spring/rain keeps its volume

johnny walker bottle,,,,, has no natural feed to keep its original volume,,, has one outlet,,, but its none of the above,,,, its either full or getting close to empty,,,

in my place,,, its a ""drought""";D ;D

There is a certain creek that the Liberals are up without a paddle.

But pretty soon the Labor mob will come rushing past, paddling like fury in a barbed wire canoe.;D

Hi Noel,

I'm pretty sure that the State Government has a Place Names Board or something like that which is responsible for naming certain places.

If you can find them (good luck), they might be able to explain how they arrive at creeks, rivers etc.

My mind was once a vibrant, thriving ecosystem, then it became dry and parched scrub, now it's just a wasteland. :'(
