I am moving to Cairns in a few weeks and I have a Stacer 565 Runabout powered by a 115 Merc. This is a good boat off shore down here in South West Victoria. However is it good enough for the water off Cairns and is it small enough to fish/crab in the rivers? I am in two minds as to whether I should sell it and downsize for the rivers/creeks. After any advice from locals who know the area.

Hi Phantom

mate nothing wrong with that boat, pick your days and head out 50 miles if ya like, as for the creeks its good enough to get into some jacks and barra no probs

yeah a 565 will be plenty. We don't get swell up here because of the reef (unless you go to the shelf) and there aren't any bars to cross. Not sure what you're expecting of the local rivers - it can be tough to get fish - but it will be ok for a day out at least.

Thanks guys. Not really sure what to expect of the rivers. Mate down here says there are plenty of crabs and prawns to be got, but is this in the smaller estuary's.? Or is he having a lend of me.

I agree with the boys above. Your boat will be fine!
As mentioned, picking your days you could be out on Batt or Tongue no worries.
I fish off Pixie etc in a 455 Stacer!

Yeah there is also no gummy sharks or snapper up here and we cant fish at the reef for 9 days a month at the moment due to closures.
so it might be best to reconsider.I'd stay down there if i was you, mate. http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/wink.gifhttp://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/grin.gif

Seriously though, your boat will be fine.
You'll be feasting on coral trout and spanish mackeral in no time.
As for the prawns I'm not sure about up there but where I am(about 1.5 hrs south)there is a popular spot at the mouth of the Murray River(just south of tully heads) that is renowned for dragging for prawns when they are running.

BTW, daz you have been a bit quiet lately.Suppose you have been too busy catching fish,mate.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/smiley.gif

Thanks Scott. No there may not be any Snapper or Gummies, but we can't fish down here for about 28 days in the month due to sea conditions, so 9 days is pretty good.

That's good, so you'll be prepared for winter in Cairns then :)

Reading this thread on an ideal boat for Nth QLD brought back a memory from the past! It hasn't had a run for a while but if you have a spare hour it's worth a read!! One of Ausfishs more infamous threads , Boat of the year better known as the 2 foot chop thread

Just spent the last hour reading this thread. Sooooo funny. Was the boat of the year that could not handle the 2 foot chop ever revealed or will it go in history as the greatest mystery in Ausfish forums.

i gave up after 13 pages....

yeah so which boat was actually boat of the year????
and wasn't kerry upset?
and is Troy still kicking around here?
and did we ever find out what a 2 foot chop really is?

so many questions...... maybe we need to revive the thread to find out the answers? :)

Yep Troy's still around! And he brought himself a cc 625 outsider which was the subject of many threads eg. How to get my boat on a trailer ( dunk it or winch) a sensor brake threads( can they be dunked) several 625 outsiders hande the nth qld chop very well threads! A few mono v cat threads, and a how much will i get for my boat thread! Can this vehicle tow my boat thread!!I believe the boat is still up for sale and it's almost new with 6hrs on the motor( must have been some 6hrs!)

All of which makes the boat of the year thread even funnier!
