While cleaning the shed found an old project. It is a 7 weight fly rod that got crushed in a car accident. Following advice from an old friend who always maintained that the best whiting rod was a fly rod coupled to a small spin reel I inserted & glued a section of similar rod inside the crushed section & then overbound it twice. Small dead section but seems strong enough. Removed end cap & made small piece using el cheapo solid butt to slide into end to lengthen butt. Feels good. Fairly soft action similar to an old hollow glass rod I had as a kid (many years ago now) Deadly on whiting. They hooked themselves. Just have to get to the coast to try it out. Has anyone heard of or tried using fly rods coupled to spin reels? Bill

Ive got one thats is used as a whiting killer at times, Definitely not downgrading from this setup for whiting.

i hear a few people in the states that say fly rods make great bait rods for small bread and butter fish, the curve in the rod can be ideal to that sort of fishing. im thinking of building one for gar/mullet fishing with floats for next easter, but i wont be lashing out on a sage blank or anything like that ;)

Have used my 4wt to chase whiting on fly, handled them no probs.
Also had a mate use a 8wt with spin reel at a casting clinic as a dare,
as he wasn't allowed to use a fly rod and line only spin and baitcasters.
It handled the casting plugs just fine and was deadly accurate too in his
hands. Some of the other guys at the clinic had a go and thought it would be interesting to test it against a few fish. Don't know if they did or not.
On that i have also heard that some fly rods also make good Black Fish (Luderick)
rods. 8wt and up (Preferably 10ft and up)
just my two cents worth

i use a 6wt with a okuma mystic 15 (4ib braid), for my light surf. best fun you can have when a big dart or bream gets hooked.

Thanks all. Glad I'm putting an extra rod carier on the camper for the extra rods I want to try. This will be one of them. Bill
