Hi Fellas,
Noticed a small leak up the front of my tinnie on Sunday - Am I better off taking it to a welder(Get it fixed properly), or are there "do it yourself" alternatives?
If taking it to a welder is the go - Anyone know of any on the Gold Coast?

A pin hole leak can be temp fixed by simply using super glue and slowly building up the layers to plug the leak. Make sure the surface is clean and not wet. Add a bit and re apply till you are satisfyed. You will e surprised how well it works.
Cheers
Aaron

Frank,
Try a mob at Currumbin called Quick Ally. They make aluminium scaffodling. Ask for Dave or Tim, tell Dave Mike from Hi Reach sent you, or tell Tim Marlin Mike AKA Meat sent you.;D Dont ask about the AKA MEat LOL. they dont do general stuff. just the scaffold, but they have the gear and their guys weld really good on aluminium as they do tonnes of scaffold a year. Havent got the number on me, but they should be in the book.

I used araldite::) about 3 layers and havent had a problem since.

Thanks Fellas - Might do a quick fix with either super glue/sikaflex/araldite for the weekend, then shoot it down to Quick Ally next week.

Frank,
If you are going to have it welded - first check to see if there are any other sus spots that may need attention.
Second - DO NOT use any form of temporary fix. - This will contaiminate the area to be welded as it is often very difficult to remove all the Sealer/glue/ whatever completely.
As someone who has had to do this more than a few times - I know.

Mark

i agree with mark! if you are ging to get it fixed dont conteminate it with quick fixes! it will take the welder longer to clean and after all time is money! ;) i also know i do many many boat repairs and the worst is when they silycone it up!

I had a small corrosion hole in my old tinny. I ran a 3/16 drill thru it and got an alloy peen rivet (available from boat stores like Bias) and peened it in the hole.
Never will it leak again.
All old boats used to be peen riveted.

I would be careful getting it welded as the edge of the weld is very thin compared with the parent metal thus encouraging cracks along that line. For small holes, I have used a simple patch. I cut a small piece of aluminium and sikaflex it onto the outside of the hull over the hole. Have had a couple of these patches a few years ago with no problems since.

Mate as a couple of people have already said don't even think about doing the quick fix if you are going to get it welded.
It will cost you twice as much to do the job.
We have got the gear at work and do this stuff all the time but we are in toowoomba. Trust me it will cost extra $$$ if you put stickaflex anywhere near the hole as it creates problems when you start the weld pool.

I used to repair holes in aluminium gas pipes with a "green stick" glue. You can heat up the area with a bit of LPG and just touch the stick to the area and a very permanent repair done. If you dont wnat to use heat you can buy some refrigerator glue; 2 pack that will bond forever. Bit dearer than the green stick,
