Only need to wear jacket when crossing bar and Tweed is NSW so they have different regulations, most ramps down there have the regulations on a sign but sometimes there out dated so you better check before hand.

There a big sign on the northern breakwall that says from this point on you must year a life jacket and thats about 150 metres before the bar so even if your drifting around out there i would wear my jacket.

Most decent tackle or boat shops in NSW will give you either a pamphlet or sticker from NSW Fisheries showing legal limits. All very well to look at a sign before you go out, but you'll need a good memory - especially if you hook up something unexpected.
Again, make sure you get your NSW fishing licence and carry you boat licence, otherwise you stand a good chance of getting caught and fined in Tweed this time of year.

They love those 6 knots zones too ie.. within 60m of a structure or another vessel or 30m of someone in the water ... can be expensive if ya not carefull.

Thats a definite no to wearing a jacket within the confines of the river with the exception of the bar area during a crossing. A PFD 2 is sufficient, you just need to have it on board for use inside the river but a PFD 1 is required outside and while crossing a coastal bar in all NSW waters
Big stink blowing up tomorrow you might find it a bit uncomfortable out there but good luck anyway
Cheers Gleeeza.
