just checking through the updated bom radar, aand they have added the doppler wind feature. looks like a fantastic tool for boaties!!!!

i'm dumb but and dunno how to read it, i got the basics, but like where you sea land or ocean does this mean its calm? and the towards radar and away from radar does this give wind directions in the areas??????

G'day lippa,

where you see land and ocean there may not be any wind, the radar points up at a small angle (0.9 deg), add the curvature of the earth and at a range of 128km you're seeing what wind there is at 3000m, not what's happening on the ground.

wind direction seems to be more evident looking at the orange 'away from radar' as the return 'towards radar' signal can't determine crosswinds. the link as at 1700hrs reads a SW wind going by the darker orange and darker blue.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/images/icons/icon5.gif

there are some explanations on the website, tho we'd need to be well versed in trigonometry to work out wind direction vectors.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/images/icons/icon11.gif

yeah I saw that last week on there website, but I think I'll stick to seabreeze

i thought the same ashh, but i'm keen to learn.
i can't do me times tables, but i'll give this trigonometry a go!!
at least the government departments are havin a go!
who konows in another 12 months they'll simplify it some more.
after all seabreeze is a simplified version of bom. they (seabreeze) are using bom data after all.

cheers

trigowhat?
if its anything like algebra, Ill pass (or should that be fail)
I still cant understand all that mixing of numbers with the alphabet lol

You should try the theoretical maths with no numbers just symbols and letters. Now that's fun. :-/

Never noticed that little link on the doppler page. Thanks Lippa for sharing. :)

You mean as in ....

;D ;D ;D There was a time , about 30 years ago when I knew what all of that meant. ;D Now I just know them to be Maxwell's equations. I wonder if Maxwell knew anything about fishin'. ;D ;D ;D

Charlie, Charlie, Charlie....
Mate you've got the resultant all wrong.
All that proves is that the cow did in fact jump over the moon :D

Doh! I thought that was only if the coefficient was squared. :-[

I have never had much luck with any sort of rhythm, to be honest. Still, that is better than having too many factorials with imaginary numbers, I guess. :-[

Still quiet at Carindale but I can see that it is coming...

i've just worked out the "doppler" had the same loop feture as the rain radar, it helps give ya an idea of the wind diretions.

its cutting sick atm!!!!!!

I have just been and had a look at it,that is awesome.
Its bloody windy here at the moment.
Cape moreton was 56 knots consistent and gusting over 60:o
