G'day all, have got a spot on a boat that will be doing a bit of trolling for marlin and anything else that comes along. I have a 24kg rod for the job but was wondering what type and size line to use? Also for those that use knife jigs what breaking strain do you use?
I have my reel spooled up with 40lb braid and 100lb leader, to light?
thanks

I would say it is too light, I would be goin 80-100lb main line and 200+ leader. OR just steal the cord from the washing line.

too light indeed however, should you have the time, patience, stamina and enough line in your reel you could land a marlin :)

go the 50lb braid to try first with 100lb of leader but make sure ur line is good quality....If u get spooled or broken off upgrade ur line to 60 or 80 or something.

thats plenty for trolling for marlin, most gamefish clubs only use 8kilo for light tackle, unless your looking for blues its plenty. although braid isnt usually used when trolling because of its zero stretch.

braid is pretty dangerous for trolling

hooks tend to pull if the drag on much at all

also, if you touch a braided line that is being stripped off at speed by a good fish, you will get cut to bits

thanks everyone,
Looks like I'll replace the braid with mono and just hang on
