Southport sand pumping jetty...any good??

Hi there fellow fisho's,,, I noticed lots of peep's tossing a line off the sand pumping jetty at southport, Is it any good off there, Obvious targets would have to be tailor, bream and flattie's, I noticed lots of the fisho's had giant surf rod's but I feel this may be over kill??? surley you dont need a surf rod off the end of the jetty, would a tuff ugly stick be effective enough or even a strong bait caster???? And would some frozen burleigh ice blocks help in my target zone or would I be wasting my time??? And what about nite time, I hear you dont have to pay if you go there after datrk and leave before 4.30 am!!
