anyone have any experience with a penn 454 gs. im looking at them to use for surf casting as a cheaper alternative to a trinidad 20.

Hi mate I assume you mean the 545, I have had the 535 for near 10 years, it's a great surf reel, tough and became my prefered reel over time, will pelt a VERY big jew bait a mile and handle every fish that comes it's way from the surf in Australia (except the 4m shark I tried to land), will also pull a decent slice at a good speed.

These reels in the mag held some distance casting records once so they are no slouch, IMO only good for surf or the rocks, I have tried it in the boat but don't like it. For the purposes I mentioned it has no failings I found (apart from the typical overhead reel at the beach potential problems).

I never found the 535 too small but have never tried the 545 either.

thanks mate. i did mean 545. i have the 525 supermag extra which i love, but does not have the line capacity i would like.
