I just did a search in the forum for Suzuki 70hp.
Back in mid 2006 there was a couple of posts saying that suzuki were soon to bring out a lighter 70HP 4 stroke. What happened???? did I miss something or has someone heard this is still happening?
About 4 weeks till I need to order something.

The boat will be ready hopefully in mid August. If I hear even a rumor that the 70hp is going to get lighter. I might have to wait. The boat that I'm getting built is going to be at least 550kg without the motor. So I nead the Max HP rated (70hp 4st).
dec is what i heard, was looking at an etec 75 but am going to be patient and stick to a 4st,yamaha is probaly working on one as well, probaly the reason for all the hush hush

If you are in that range have a close look at the New Honda 75hp. I went to the dealer launch - a lot of people were igenuinly impressed.
It the first model with a technology that gives a fast take off. Called a silly name "blast" it senses how fast you hit the throttle and responds with fuel, timing advance and electronic knock sensor.
Its based on the Jazz car engine - so its well tested
I am sure there are other good engines out there - but this one is definitely worth a look.

Gary weight is the issue with me ,currently have a 60 at 118 kgs all the others are inthe range of 160kgs and above

Gary Unfortunately the boat builder will not budge on the 70HP max rating. So it doesn't leave me with much to choose from in the 4 strokes (Legally).
I was told by Col at Fisherboats that a new lighter 70HP motor was on the horizon so it's only a matter of time.

So how are they making this engine lighter? Couple of ways 1 is to use an alloy that is lighter - been done before by everyone, its far closer to an aspro than the aluminium we had in the 70s.
Another is to build a smaller capacity higher performance engine but still have the same HP but loose some torque.
What capacity is the next block size down in Suzuki 4 st engines? if any.
Might be based on one of their other engines like a bike? -good idea for spare parts if they do.
just rambling

I am also eagerly waiting to see how much lighter the new 70 will be.
I daresay, when it is finally released, that it won't be significantly lighter.
Honda had similar claims about their new 75/90. When the speficiations came out, they were only about 10 - 15kgs lighter. An improvement I suppose, but hardly significant.
It is difficult to see how they can significantly reduce weight without reducing the quality, as per a couple of scenarios that FNQ pointed out.
I am sure we will get plenty of warning that the motors are coming as their is sure to be advertising in all the appropriate media months before the motors are available.

If they don't want to advertise months before, the current model will drop in price. Makes the buyer feel better when the new model comes out a couple of grand dearer. I haven't been looking at prices all that long. Has anyone noticed anything?

Make sure you check the real hp / Kw rating and get a copy of the torque curve. They are getting really smart with their marketing and some 75 are not 75 other than by sticker on the cowl they are more like a 72-3 and check what revs it is doing it at. Also check the torque to make sure it isn't just at WOT that it gets any torque otherwise it will be hard work keeping it on the plane at midrange without it boging down in every swell.
A lot of weight in motors is the common tilt trim and motor bracket, mid section components they share between models. Regardless of power increase or decrease they weigh the same.Common injectors (copper coil) used on DI engines are basically the same across the range also are a common heavy item.
One other thing I noticed - don't know if they are still doing it- is that some manufacturers were weighing their motors without fluids so in a larger 4 stroke you can end up with an extra 5-7kg of extra oil weight (inc tilt trim). They were also weighing without hardware like prop and mounting bolts etc etc. You also end up with the weight of hydraulic steering on the transom. Stainless props on big motors are heavy as.
With motor you can get more power output and less weight in many ways.
Cut out more metal
use lighter metal
use plastic
lighterweight components like carbon fibre cowls or less sound proofing.
Move from internal to external remote oil tank
timing chain to timing belt.
lighter flywheel
electric start/ manual start
A decent high amp alternator and ststor weight a bit.
Mechanically you can make a smaller HP motor produce more HP by changing compression, fuel delivery and mapping/ jetting, timing, exhaust design, inlet manifold design, stroke / bore/ piston shape all in the same block.

Only new 2008 release I have read about is a new DF250 SS coming out in the US for the bass boats. Has the VVT and lower profile leg off the DF300
