I am after a keel guard for my new 5.42 Haines Signature. The ramps at Gladstone, CQ are concrete only and are not too kind on the keels.
What I want to know is ...

1. Where in CQ or Brisbane can I get a keel guard ? I rang Bias & Whitworth and they didn't even know what I was talking about.

2. How much are they ?

3. Are they any good ?

Thanks for any replies !!!

Hi, dont know about keel guards but my mate has a glass boat and he carries a tyre in the boot if he is by himself.

Drops the tyre on the ramp and lifts front of boat onto it. No rim of course :)

works well.

Thanks Wahoo but I am after the product called "KEELGUARD".
Keelshield does the same job but after doing a bit of research I want KEELGUARD.

Any-one know where I can get it from ?

what I did with mine was lay 4 layers of 600g mat along it about 50mm wide, tinted the resin with flowcoat tinter and aplied with a roller. Finished up with a couple of coats of flowcoat. What this does is maintain the color and it still looks the same as it wears away. Reapply after a few years.
cheers

Rumy,

I live in Gladstone myself and have a keelgaurd on my Cruisecraft. It was purchased and installed by the dealer, Reef City Marine. It was around $350.00 and apparently it takes a bit of getting on, as it's a piece of fairly hard rubber which comes wound up in a coil and I think you apply heat to soften the material/rubber.

Good news is that it looks fairly durable, I'd say it would last for years. But! the first one that was applied partly came off the strip has an adhesive strip and it separated between the rubber and the adhesive strip, which stayed stuck to the hull. However as the dealer had installed it I was able to have them re-install another strip.

The keelgaurds are made by 3M.

If you wish to look at mine please let me know.

Thanks SeaJay1 .... I will give Reef City Marine a call. Good idea to have the dealer fit it then if it comes off, just take it back. It costs about $300 so the extra $50 would be worth it. I saw Brad Busteed's boat and he has one on and also Trevor just got one ... he was the bloke that won the hook-up boat.
He is wetting his boat for the first time today actually.

Thanks for all the replies !

SeaJay1 ....I just got a price off Reef City Marine this morning and they said it was $350 plus $150 to fit it. They give a 6 month warranty. Dearer than I thought but probabably worth it. $500 total cost ...... I like the idea of them fitting it because if I do and it falls off .... that'll be $350 gone !
Apparently they fit about 2 a month so they are pretty good at it now and use a heat gun to make it fit better.

Hi
I have a keel guard fitted to my seafarer victory and wouldn't be without it. I can nose the boat up on to the ramp with no worries about damaging the keel. It also makes it easier for my deckie to hold the boat (she's only 5') if its my turn to go get the car and trailer. I got mine by post from NSW and installed it myself. I'll look up the details and get back to you.

I was wrong, my keel protector strip is a keelshield. I got it via Marine Network 4 Sanoni Ave Sandringham Ph 02 95934737 email amvrazis@optusnet.com.au
I installed it myself, I taped it in place first with some masking tape and marked its final position with a pencil. Then followed the instructions. It has been on for nearly a year and doesn't look like coming off.

There are definite differences in the two products and the materials they are made out of.
Head to head testing shows that KeelShield performed better than the keelguard. The results are posted on www.keelshield.com (http://www.keelshield.com) for all to see.
The megaware product is not made by 3M as earlier posted and keelguard is not thicker.

The Australian contact for KeelShield is Marine Network which is posted above.

If anyone has any questions I would be glad to answer them, just email me.

This looks like a great board full of information, full of members trying to help.
Keep up the great work !!!
