i didn't know where to post this,,,,, i think it belongs in the Ripleys Believe It Or Not section,,,,

direct from Ron BRooks of Saltwater Fishing fame,, the following article was extracted,,,,,,,,i kid you not

PETA Protests Fishing

PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has a new program underway to protest fishing. Their “Turn in Your Tackle” campaign is designed to reach folks who may be relatives or friends of anglers. PETA plans to use the tackle they gather in future anti-fishing campaigns and displays. PETA is known for placing animal rights on a par with human rights.
PETA gains members every year, and their main anti-fising campaign is designed to tell people that fish feel pain when hooked.

On another front, the Society for Preservation Of Organic Fruit (SPOOF) is meeting this week to talk about pain sensors on the skins of oranges. Small microphones have been placed in many large orange groves in Florida in an attempt to hear the mysterious sounds that an orange makes as it is violently and ruthlessly ripped from a tree limb…

"their main anti-fising campaign is designed to tell people that fish feel pain when hooked"

I fail to see how this would stop anyone fishing. I am sure they feel pain when a bigger fish or shark chews them in half too.
I don't care if they feel pain, I don't see how that comes into it.
What animal in the wild has a pain free death?
Being killed by a fisherman is probably the best death they could hope for.
Living off the land in the wild for a couple of years while your growing up should be as compulsory as school, then these wankers would be brougt into the real world.

If you read the PETA site they have all sorts of campgains going. One type resorted to entering schools and telling the children their Dad's were " Killers ". Yep, ya dad is a killer cause he fish's.

Can you imagine the issues this raised in the minds of the children ? Letr alone the problems it may have caused in the relationship between the family members.

I have searched Ebay for some time now looking for a very large " Commonsense Mallet " with which to embelish the mindset of groups like PETA. Send me the link as soon as anyone finds one !!!! ;)

Trouble with PETA, if you ask " let he who is without sin, cast the first stone " the pebbles of this world would be unmoved.

Anyway, enough of this from me.

Ben,

I wish you were right about them. Unfortunatley PETA is a very strong organisation with BIG financial backing. They have recruited some highly influencial people and celebrities to back there ridiculous cause against fishing.(particularly in USA). I cant explain much more , but I read some interesting threads about them on another popular QLD fishing website last year which opened my eyes. I too thought they were a bunch of tree hugging hippies with no idea. but they are much more organised than that.

Unfortunatley they are going to be a BIG thorn if the fishing industries side for a long time.

Stevo's right,

I know people who are donate regularly to PETA and they are perfectly normal, level headed people. I tell them that PETA attacks my sport and I treat fish very humanely, but the reason they donate is because of all the campaigns PETA undertakes to rescue tortured dancing bears, severely mistreated horses, dogs, cats, orangutans used as prostitutes, etc, etc.

PETA is a very smart organisations and DO have massive funding from people everywhere who care about animals.

Do we as fishos care about animals? I'm sure most of us don't thrash our dogs or torture fish for the fun of it ? Unfortunately, there is no way of stopping the money donated by people being used against us, even if those people giving the money are quite ok with sensible fishing practices.

I think the best defence is to keep the fishing for food agenda on the table as they really hate C & R just for the sake of it. I know because I read the newsletters.

Cheers,
Mick.

Spoof is some thirty years behind the times, Bill Oddie tried to get this running in the 80's

The 'Not The News At Ten' bulletin reports on wild celebrations at the Battersea Dogs Station now that laws have been passed which give animals equal status with people, and make it illegal to discriminate against animals in any way. Bill takes animal equality to heart, as he sits on the cat, tells the dog to fetch his supper and shapes up to spray on Tim's throne!. However he soon settles down to watch a new television wildlife spectacular for animals set in the Galapagos Islands (and hosted by Graeme as an appropriately weird David Rabbitborough!) which features the lifestyles of wildlife presenters, such as Jacques Cousteau, Patrick Moore and the notoriously destructive David Bellamy.

Graeme sits back, watches all of this (complete with nose bulb up his snozzle!) and wonders whether presenters, and people in general, should be used as a food source like other animals - "Cousteau and chips ... or Kentucky Fried Bellamy!" This view is initially supported by Tim until Bill threatens to kill and eat him, and he then declares that the next step in animal equality will be worldwide compulsory vegetarianism. Carnivore Bill is dismayed by this and vows to stand up for his carrots in a show of vegetable power. Graeme and Tim are worried that Bill is going to do something that they will regret, and their search for him soon ends, as he appears on their tv screen as a guest of the Rabid Frost Show.

Rabid, a black Labrador dog, hosts Bill as a representative of the Freedom Of Vegetables League, and a rabbit as the leader of the Animal Revolutionary Party. After Bill has already upset animal members of the studio audience by thanking Rabid for the opportunity of "eating your guest ... er, meeting your guest, sorry, sorry!", he explains that he sees the whole country as "one great big melting pot". He then produces a large pot, with various vegies in high places (including a security leek!) and plenty of room for the animal leader as well. Graeme and Tim watch this unfold on a monitor in another studio, and are horrified when Bill heartily scoffs his rabbit stew, which sets off an angry attack from the dogs and other animals present.

these animal rights tossers have tried it on my local river, theey set out a fishing bivvy, and rods, and tangled the trees with line, left maggots out to attract wildlife then littered the area, even though the stupid sods failed to realise that it was fisherman and clubs who turned the uk rivers from filthy cess pits into pristine waterways crammed full of fish, they also didn't realise on us fishos cleaning their mess up and erasing any exidence of them being there, it also escaped them that the edges of our rivers have absolutley no litter at all, the stupid sods make my blood boil, narrow minded, closeted fools

current research indicates that it is unlikely that fish can feel pain. They do not have the part of the brain which processes pain. They do have nocioception, which even an amoeba has.

I recently did some research on the fish and pain subject, and can send it to anyone who supplies me with their email address.

;D F.A.R.T. ? That's a good start, but you may have a tough sell. Although, standing on a soapbox on a street corner with a megaphone saying, "I'm a FARTer, are you?" or "FART-- for your fishing rights!" may get you attention. Yeah, it may just work.;D Get to FARTin' Pinhead and let us know how it works out!

Chopper, your thread worries me - the tone you take suggests to me you are, in fact, an orange murderer! (or at the very least you condone the torture of citrus fruits).

I think I will join PETA cos I love animals, especially beef pork and veal.

(to be pedantic, insulin from pigs is hardly used now - it is mostly manufactured from recombinant human dna, but the point that these "fruit loops" don't see the big picture is well made)

These people in these organizations are a joke!!!>:(

Do they not eat meat ( the animal must feel pain)
Do they not eat veggies, if, according to spoof, if an orange can feel pain what about lettuce, tomato, mushrooms, etc

If we lived our life according to these fools, we would starve, so we might as well all top ourselves now;D

What a joke!!!!! I'm sure we all have better things to do, like GO FISHING

I actually think most insulin is synthetic nowdays.. I was almost put on insulin about 5 years ago but that was enough for me to sort my shit out, and now I manage my diabetes with diet, exercise and medication.. Certainly back then I got the impression that most of it was artificially made

So long as they extract the insulin before the bacon, all will be OK ;D

As for the rest, well there are a lot of mistreated animals in the world, so if they can do some good for them, great, but hooking a fish, despatching it promptly and taking it home for tea is not mistreating them in my opinion

Jeez, when I was a kid if you said you were interested in spoof you would of got bashed.....................................
Well I've fished for years and I know this will kick up a stink but I can't sit back and pretend otherwise...........
Whether fish feel pain or not "sportsfishing" marlin etc. that drags on for ages on light line etc. cannot be regarded by any sane or reasonable person as not detrimental to the fishes health, long or short term.....
I don't believe the fishermen that have their head up their ar$e$ and pretend that it's not........... sorry if I pi$$ anyone off but I just had to say it.
