View Full Version : Noodeling catfish
If you know what that means you seen the show "dirty jobs " on foxtel last nite...for those who didnt see it......there was 2 guys swimming along the bank of a lake, going under water feeling for holes in the bank that catfish lived in...they were shoving in thier arms feeling around..when the catfish bit then they would drag them out of the hole.........this was then followed by a how to clean then bit, that included ripping of the skin with pliers....them sure are different folk over there

Besides the fact that those fish can kill you with their spikes, there are many reasons why "noodling" is insane. Two real good ones are poisonous snakes and snapping turtles.
Do a quick Google search of copperhead and/or cottonmouth snakes and alligator snapping turtles for more information.

yeah, noodling seems to have been invented specifically for complete nutters.
How they manage to pull some of those huge critters out of holes without being dragged under and drowned, I have no idea....

Red Bull,
But what do they do with those monster catfish?
Sounds like there must be a distinct lack of entertainment in that part of the country.

They obviously do not have giant mudcrabs there either, imagine the point of recognition of what u are playing with in those murky waters.

Scott, I have no idea what is done with the fish. You'd reckon big old catties like these from fresh water would taste about as good as old rubber boots, wouldn't you?!
Maybe they use em to feed their pet 'gators? :P

I suppose it all depends if the noodlers have any relatives in the area and if not, if there's a shortage of piggies ;D

Hi red bull,my missus is from the states and introduced me to southern style cooking.Just coat it in cajun cooking spices and barbeque it till its black.
Then it really doesnt matter if its a hundred pound catfish or rib fillet. All you taste is butt burning, barbequed, black sh!t.http://www.ausfish.com.au/vforum/../yabbfiles/Templates/Forum/default/rolleyes.gif
juju were the catties on the program as big as the ones in red bulls photos or were they actually edible?

Yeah heard this on a radio program last year and they actually rang a couple of guys from down town Hootersville (or wherever you go noodelin' in the back waters of a US State) and spoke to them about it.
The classic saying that ended the conversation was from one of the noodlers -
Quote: "if you aint bleedin you aint noodelin"
I think the two guys they spoke to had guest spots in a movie called "Deliverence" !!!! ::)

Oh My Lord. ::)
there is even a wiki on it....

I particularly like this quote,
have recently been unconfirmed reports of a noodler from the mid-south reaching into a catfish hole, only to be greeted by a group of water moccasins (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agkistrodon_piscivorus) which fatally bit him
And a youtube video complete with background banjos...
