I want to set up a good (not too expensive) surf/beach tailor outfit and want to do it right the first time.
What do you use? ie...
what length rod?
spin or alvey? (I know alvey have good name for longevity but do they cast as far as spinning reels?)
line; braid or mono and what pound?
please help!8-)

I use a 13'6 wilson, an alvey, mono line @15pound usely with a 20pound leader,BUT as said before i would love a Gary Howard Green Back. It is an awesome tailor rod, It is 13'6 aswell.

I use a FSU 4120 (10') with a TSS4 with 14 lb Fireline for spinning and a Magsurf 13'6" and 650a Alvey with 10kg Mono. Both work a treat. Plenty of good options out there.

I use an old Butterworth 13' 6" with a 650A Alvey. 15lb Platypus Platinum with 20 lb leader. You could use Platypus Super 100 which is about 10% thinner than the Platinum for the same breaking strain.

Hi Ash.
I use 13' Live Fibres, one is a 6kg -10kg for spinning, the other is an 8-15kg beast, for casting large sinkers and baits.
If I had the money I would probably build a rod up on a Purglass blank!
I now use threadlines, although previously used Alveys for over 30 years.
Either reel will cast well with a good rod, a balanced rig, and with a decent technique.
I generally use 8kg mono, with a shock leader if necessary, about 8mtres of 15kg.
As Horse says, plenty of good gear out there to choose from.
Cheers.

13'6 wasp by wilson, matched with a dawia Emcast sport 6000.. 2 spools 1 with 400m of 10kg and 1 with 300m 5kg braid.. this outfit is throws a 40g up 85g slug with out any problems.. $130ish for the rod, $130ish for the reel.. so all up with line about $300!!

Hope this helps ;)

I have a Live Fibre trophy 12' med, that i'm happy to sell as i hate the pos..;D

thanks for the response guys :)
but look what I found hidden in my mums garage...
mum said she got this for dad over 20years ago for his birthday one time, and said he had never used it!
Brushed the cobwebs and dust off and it seems to be in its original great condition, the resins on the bindings look a little yellow and the rod is a hollow fibreglass type with not many runners....might be a bad thing? The alvey is in mint condition tho;D
Anyways I measured it up and its a 12.1ft wilson special surf, with a 6inch surf champion alvey (not a drag model, I dont think they were invented back then?), all I need to do is spool it up with some new line :)
and guess Ill just see how it goes, besides it gotta be better than nothing 8-)

Ashh - that will do the job admirably!
I'd reackon there's been many a tailor caught on outfits exactly like that, had a very similar set-up myself at one stage.
Drag? Just use the palm of your hand to slow the spool. Simple and effective!
AND the price was certainly right!
Cheers and enjoy!

Ashh,

Nice one mate. Any chance I could have a look through your mum's garage? :-)

I'd whack some 15lb Super 100 on the Alvey and you're set.

Good luck,
Mike

I have two rods. A 10 footer I made myself many years ago from a butterworth blank, and a wilson 13 foot graphite el cheapo I bought about 20 years ago. I only use the 13 footer when I cant cast far enough with the 10 footer, as it feels sloppy in comparison.

I Use an Alvey 650C with 15lb mono for both. The Alvey casts much further than a spinning reel on both rods. That may be a function of the rods being designed for the Alvey, dunno, dont care!

I have 3, a 12' 2P Daiwa graphite with Daiwa 7000C I use when travelling, an older model 13' Butterworth Alvey 6", and a Maple 12'.6" with am Okuma Axeon 90 Surf Special spooled with 20Lb Super 100, all these outfits work well, I also have a 10' Silstar outfit for off the rocks..

Nice setups there, I am looking for a nice spin set up.

I use a alvey 650 C with Drag and 13'6 Snyder Glas Mag Surf, also have 13'6 pacific composite and alvey 650 C bit heavier on top than the snyder. Definately agre with the casting, alot further than when i use it with a egg beater.

Cheers

For spinning I have a 12ft daiwa coastline rod matched with a TSS4 and 15lb mono. I also have a 13ft 6 graphite rod matched with a 650bcv alvey and both combos are fantastic. It looks like a good time to use them as the tailor seem to be on down the gold coast.

Cheers

I ended up buying myself a nice spin combo so I can do some metal spinning as well as bait. That alvey and rod just didnt seem to suit me, maybe Im not use to it, but I do really like my new setup.
Anyone wants that alvey and surf rod, 50 bucks and its yours, Im not going to get any use out of it.
