G'day

Depends on what you are in

I have been in a 30kt sou easter, and gusting 35 and a bit more.

The bay is an absolute mongrel of a place in those circumstances,

I have a lot of respect for the bay about 4yr ago before i got my bluefin i was at mud in a brooker open tinnie with a 40hpmerc it was 10-15kt when i got there and about 2pm a front came threw and it must have been 30kts the trees on the island were well and truly swaying about 14 boats were stuck there had to go and ask a bloke on a cruiser if i could tie of on to him because i could not get the boat to anchor he fed me give me a couple of beers and let me camp on board ended up getting a break in the weather in the morning so made a run for nudgee havnt been caught out in the fin though keep a lot closer eye on the weather patterns these days makes it a lot easier with the internetand the knowledge gained from this site ......:P :P :P :P

about 40knots, but I was windsurfing :D
As far as whats the maximum wind conditions, it's definately boat related, and how you drive it. My tinny isnt too happy in more than 10 knots of wind, but a 685 outsider or similar wouldnt be too worried by 25+.

I dont go out if more than 15 knts is forcast, just gets too lumpy...got caught over at the wreaks once when a 25-30 knt sw came in...was a long trip back to sandgate...

what size boat you're in helps. up our end of the bay i reckon it depends how long it's been blowing for. for example running home to beachy from moreton in 15 to 20 can be a little sporty if it blows up out of nothing, but if it's been blowing as little as 10 to 15 and hasn't dropped out overnight then we won't bother because it's way too uncomfortable.

As a general rule of thumb 10/15 knots in an open stretch of water "roughy" equates to 1 - 1.5 metre seas and plus a bit more at times. A good 15 knots will eventually push up quite a reasonable sea for small craft.

Once there's white caps then it's "generally " over 12-13 knots.

Also depends on fetch.......ie the length of water that the wind blows over.

If you at the southern end of a long/ large bay with a very strong southerly blowing, then conditions will be much better than those at the northern end of the bay.....fetch.
