I am looking for a new reef anchor, not the normal bent steel bar ones. The one that I have seen look like steel tube with triangular pieces of steel on one end. Has anyone else seen them & if so where do I get one or do I have to make it. I only have a 5mt. allison so space is very important, & these seem much easier to store than the normal ones
There was something like that at northside marine the other week when i was in there.....id hate to try and get it off if it was stuck hard in some rocks...

I have a Mooloolaba pick. Looks like a rod with back the front rocket fins on it. Got it from Leisure Marine. I put the D shackle thru the front and then zip tie to the end so that it will come out frontwards. Only used it a couple of times because we normally drift offshore.

They hold very good, very compact. the chain is shackled to the "pointy end" and a piece of tie wire secures the chain to the 'rope end'. When stuck the wire breaks and the anchor comes free. I make my own but I am sure you could buy them.

Hi Darren
Looks like the one Mr Bean has posted. The one i make insead of triangle shapes on the end i have 50 x 6 mm flat bar x 150mm long cut at @ 30 deg angle at both ends (like a parallelagram or rhobus, can't remember, long time since i was at school), 4 off (just easier to cut flat bar than to cut triangles, does the same job). Then welded onto the shaft. Shaft solid or pipe, solid is better (heavier) @ 400-500mm long. Weld a chain link onto both ends of the shaft.
I make them out of stainless (quite accessable to me) or steel and galvanize it.
Ps I have a nice stainless sand anchor too

A "proper" reef anchor will not take up much room if you shorten the "prongs" to the length they SHOULD be, I have no idea why they make them so long in the first place, I have a 6 metre cat and use a 1/2" reef anchor and have absolutly no worries holding in almost any wind, BUT the prongs are very short (as they should be) those long ones when you buy a new anchor must be cut down to buggery to be any good.

Hi Noelm
what lenth have you cut the bars to, I can see the merit in doing it.

I will measure them tonight to make sure but I guess about 10 inches (maybe shorter) and I never have a drama with holding, when you get the anchor new they are miles too long, I also make my own when I feel 'frisky" i make about half a dozen and get them galvanised.

if ya don't feel like cutting the bars blaze, just bend them about 6 or so inches from the end and whack a stainless hose clamp at the bend to hold all the bars together. this seems to work for me on inshore rocky bits anyway.
