My EPIRB's just about out of date. The GME 406 and Garmin 400 seems to be $449 regardless of where you buy. Anyone seen better specials on these or other 406MHz models?
Or do I buy another 121.5MHz EPIRB for $169 to last to Feb 09 and hope for a big price drop in the other?
(Kerry, I know about the differences between the safety margins - I have been training as a long distance swimmer to offset the risks)

Recently bought a GME406 from Northside Marine for $399.00.
Whitworths have them for the same price.

Whitworths have the GME MT400 406 Mhz for $399, that's about the cheapest 406 around.

they usually will only give you boatshow price on stocked items...not ordered...so unless you camp out you might miss out on the 15%

So, the question is " do I spend $169 now, for 2 years worth of coverage and then hope to get the 406 at much better than $399 ? ".
So, if the 406 comes down to say $299 in 2009, that's only $130 diff. Then again, the 406 may just remain at the $400 price after 2009 ? who knows !!
If you buy the 121, you will have double the security after 2009 won't you ? or are the authorities going to completely NOT cover the 121 range ?
The question is still, what is my life and the life of my crew worth ? The 406 has a much improved location range and that really means less time at risk.
Seems like a no brainer to me.

121.5 Mhz won't be be monitored by SAR satellites after Feb 2009.
121.5 Mhz will be still used as a homing frequency for searching aircraft though, the 406 Mhz EPIRB's also transmit on 121.5 for that purpose.

And the best news is the Garmin 400 uses the same screw hole pattern as the old 300 series so no drilling required!
