G'day All,

In Queensland we have the MSQ Beacon to Beacon directory ... sort of like a Refidex / UBD of the waterways.

Is there such a book available for NSW waters?

In particular we need info for Sydney, Port Stephens, Port Macquarie and Coffs Harbour as we have to bring a Riviera 40 back from Sydney to Brisbane.

Cheers

Pete

Hi Pete

Cruising the NSW Nth Coast by (Alan?) Lucas is a good start - seen it for sale at Bias, otherwise Boat Books in Brissie. Sounds like a great trip - you could find a couple of stow-aways if you're not careful!

GM, get a hold of a chart AUS 220 (I think) Plans in NSW, it has the harbour plans for a few of those ports. PM if you want some help with a passage plan for the trip, I'm very familar with that voyage, but not on short hops unfortunately.

cheers

NSW Maritime do some pretty easy to read maps of the areas of th e areas they cover. Nothing with too much info, but has depths, contours, markers and leads etc. From memory I was paying about $6 each over the counter.

Here is the web address

The Qld "Hooked in Paradise" covers Great Sandy Strait to Ballina. There may be a NSW version that covers further South.

Try and get hold of a Crawford's Mariners Atlas for the NSW coast. This is exactly what your looking for, I have one somewhere but just can't seem to find it at the moment.
I got mine from BIAS some time ago, not sure if they are still in circulation though. ??

I think you are right. I think that one is hard to get retail. You may need to order it or look at the more specialised outlets.

Ive done a couple of trips Woopy (Coffs) - Sydney and Port Mac - Sydney and from memory i think that those books might skip part of the coast. I dont think its 100% coverage, but its pretty good. I was using a mates book so cannot check it to confirm for you. But they are a good book none the less.

Buying a few AUS Charts of the coast would not be that expensive (non laminated $25-25 each ?)

But then you still should have more detailed maps for ports so you can refuel or make an emergency stop in foul weather. The dollars add up !

You could probaly sell the AUS charts and get some money back. Sorry for not answering the original question Pete.

cheers

Thanks to everyone,

We have picked up a copy of Cruising the NSW Coast, and all relevant charts.

We also have Lowrance H2O colour hand held GPS / Navionics charts

The boat is a new Riviera 40, but doesnt have the electronics fitted yet, so it is a "basic" gps setup and a lot of practical navigation skills ... gee thats gonna test me after getting lazy with GPS.

I will fit it with a full Raymarine E Series package when it gets back to Brisbane, but I dont have time to do it in Sydney.

I will look for the Crawford Mariners Atlas too...

Steve, thanks for the offer of route planning ... I will give you a yell if we get stuck.

It looks like the legs will be Sydney to Coffs, then Coffs to Brisbane, via the Goldcoast Seaway

Thanks again.

Cheers

Hey Pete,
Sure you don't need some ballast?? It can get pretty bumpy coming up from Sydney. :)

Hi GM, i'm curious how long do you it will take to do the trip.

As for sheltered scenic spots to pull in to, theres Newcastle, Port stephens, Forster, Port Macquarie, Nambucca Heads is nice but you never get a 40 footer over the bar, looked real shalow last week. South west rocks, Of course Coffs Harbour.

It will be a solid 2 day trip - 22 hours for 400 nauticals

We may take 3 days - depending on weather.

Hi GM, thanks for that, geez thats not bad, would take me longer than that with the kids in me car. The wife has to stop every few hours as well and then find a 5 star Motel. Sounds like a great trip, something I would like to do one day.

I Just need a much bigger boat.
