Defect Details: In the affected outboard motors, there is a potential for the grip's throttle shaft on the tiller handle (steering handle) to break. This could cause loss of throttle control and reduced steering ability.

Consumer action: Contact your local Yamaha Dealer to set up an appointment to have your unit remedied free of charge.

Product Info: Honda BF150A4. Serial No. Prefix BANJ from 1000029 to 1005678. BAPJ from 1000012 to 10000775. Honda BF135A4. Serial No. Prefix BARJ from 1000010 to 1001478. BASJ from 1000001 to 1000094. All units were built between 2004 and 2005.

Defect Details: The transmission shift arm which shifts driving directions back and forth, may crack when a large force is imposed on the joint between the shift arm and the shaft. After repeated use, there is a possibility of the shifting arm developing a crack and splitting. Therefore, if shift arm use continues, in the worst case scenario the arm may break, disabling the transmission. This may cause the vessel to drift, it is stuck in neutral, or to remain in gear.

Consumer action: Letters will be sent to registered owners to contact their Honda Marine Dealer to schedule for an inspection and replacement.

I have a mate that repairs outboards for a local surf club and he told me that the Yamahas have always broken the tiller handle and the mount (swivel) bracket, these are on 20 and 25HP, and keep in mind that a "clubbie" with a rubber duck in the surf could wreck almost anything! they have now swapped almost entirely to Tohatsu now, with a couple of Johnsons thrown in.

Looks like you have a non-oriental ... Made in Fon Du Lac USA Mariner... So you need not worry.. :-) They've been making them for decades.

OH, I have a mate that does all the repairs on the local Surf Club motors, and he has replaced quite a few tiller handles and swivel brackets on Yamahas (I know because I help him out when he is busy) the swivel brackets break where the clamp goes and the tillers just snap off, now you have to be honest here, a Surf Club motor does not get looked after in any way (when in use) they get flogged, run up on the beach, tipped over in the surf, dragged around, all sorts of things, but then so do the Tohatsu's and they seem to hold up fine!

I must also add, that the actual motors do not give any trouble at all, I think they are all 25HP it is just the bits and pieces around it that fail.
