Hi guys, my son came running inside to me today and was shouting mum come look, there is BIG fish in our creek, I said naaa cant be, we dont get Big fish this far up the creek, he said we have, we have, so I went for a walk just down a little and saw them 3 big ones, one just near our home laying near the tunnels, and 2 other bigger ones on the other side of our tunnel..Potty mullet had had a good feed, so had the muddies by the look, but "WHAT" type is it, to me it looks like some sort of mackerel, they were a fair size, I wonder what happened for them to be right up where we are??????

Can anyone identify exactly what type they are..Poor Blighters..:(
They look small in the pics but they were a few kilos I can tell ya..:o

Thats what I thought too, Mactuna, was just looking them up??
Why are they this far up?? So weird, unless a shark has driven them, then they have lost thier way maybe??

Why dump 3 good size mactuna??? What a waste of life, if they didnt want them, then they should of released them..
We have a nice long run off of the Tally creek..When high tides come thru it can get quiet lovely..

Chezzy13

We have had a good run of big bucks this season here in the creek, so maybe they dumped them to atrract some, who knows, just seems weird, they are decent size fish.

G'day

Fair enough they're decent sized but they are mac tuna, no good to eat.

Why do people dump things?? your guess is as good as mine.

At the ramp thismorning when I came in, there was a dead stingray on the ramp that had one of its wings cut off....... you work that out

Could be that someone had been sharking as sting ray flap is a killer bait.......no excuse for dumping the rest though. Also, when you flap 'em, the liver drops out and apart from making good berley, it is also a delicacy amongst some ethnic folk. Yolgnu style the stigray is gutted and the liver kept. The ray is boiled and then the meat is separated from the cartilage. Some re boil the meat and then rub the raw liver through the meat. The meat is then rolled into balls and eaten either as they are or in coconut milk. You can add some Thai spices to the coconut milk and you have a proper gourmet meal.

If you want to try eating stingie, there is some good recipes here:

Also, any recipes applicable to skate work with stingray

Your so right there, thats why, if they were dumped, what a waste of life. Its disgusting.
I have not tasted what they taste like, but I'm all for releasing if its not your cup of tea....
Fishing is all "about" looking after our waters, and its future..As well as enjoyment, and Baking some catches..;)

But the SAD and horrid thing is, you will always get the ones that DONT GIVE a dam..:(

Great post on the recipies there kev

It always amazes me on HOW did pople ever find out that that was the way to cook an animal, or to make it better?

A bit like the story of, what was the guy doing when he discovered cows milk was drinkable and good for you?

The larger question for me Dave, is how come that knowledge became world wide?

Disregard the theories that man invented fire, or that it was a naturally occurring phenomena via lightning, and focus on just how wide the usage was. Just how, in a world where travel and communication was limited, did all the races learn to cook by fire? How was that discovery made universal when mere mortals couldn't communicate as they can now? http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/23/23_11_52.gif

There's something to be said for Von Daniken's theories, despite him coming in for a lot of criticism. Whether you believe or not, he's a bloody good read when the wind's blowing ;D

I can feel no pity for vermin like Mack tuna 8-)8-)8-)8-)8-). Don't worry there is plenty more where that came from.

One of the best books you will ever read regarding mankind's evolution is Guns, Germs and Steel. Amazing stuff in there.

Or..... considering its easter - have a look at the reference book on man's origins. If you follow that story - man could speak from the start, so no probs handing down info about fire.

Yes, but probs talking to others across the world who had a different language and who seemed to be using fire at the same time...........did they all have the same thought/discovery at the same time, or did someone/thing/deity communicate it to them? :-/

Kev, maybe the aliens visited all the tribes after their work was done with the pyramids? lol

Seriously though, I don;t think we will never know, but didnt man originate from what we know as africa, when all the continents were joined?

Maybe the discovery was made back then and passed on as common knowledge from generation to generation.

But then again, most discoveries were made due to pure accident, but my history is shocking so i have nothing to back up what i have just said :)

Here's theology 1.01 Use of fire pre-dates differentiation of separate languages at the tower of Babel incident. Each language group dispersed with their own kind, and took all of their accumulated knowlege with them. Prior to that time I believe that all spoke a common language. Genesis 11:1 "And the whole earth was of one language, and of one speech."

Are we treading on dangerous ground here - bringing up belief systems?

I'm not bothered, but others may be :-X

Hey Kev, I just had a brief look at the first link. Some of the definitions of what a creationist is and what are the various types are, are just plain wrong. His bias shows. My bias also shows in my comments.

So my point is not whether its OK to be biased, but which bias is the best bias to be biased with in the first place. (This comment is not sponsored by a well-known chandlery either ;D)

In other words - what glasses do you look at the world through. I have my glasses, others choose to view things through different lenses.

The second link merely moves the same question one step away.

Well I dunno mate :-/ I've been looking at the world through different glasses for years now, and although some are rose coloured, and some plain brown horn rimmed ones, they all have one thing in common.........either I didn't clean 'em properly or some bugger put up a smoke screen in front of 'em ;D

I know the truth's out there.............I just can't seem to find it ;D

kev,it sounds like you have checked out Teotihuacan.Even some of the earlier Mayan stuff at Palenque,Tikal and Copan is fairly amazing considering the tools and resources available at the time.
As I look around from my perspective I see a damaged and perhaps dying world, largely caused by people with strong beliefs (be they religious ,capitalistic, moralistic or whatever) and realize that perhaps we as individuals need to be a little more open to change, sensitive to the needs of others and the planet and less moulded in our beliefs .

Did a lot of reading when I was younger Scott and yes, I agree with you that we need to be more open minded in our beliefs and also more accepting of others' beliefs and steer clear of dogma.

It's ironic, considering that this thread has gone right off topic (guilty m'lud), ;D that we are now talking about Teotihuacan which collapsed due to drought and climate change and the civil unrest that followed...........have we really learned anything from the past?

Coming from a farming family, kev, it was quite amazing to stand atop of the pyramids of the sun and moon at Teotihuacan after having seen drawings and mock ups of the lush surroundings of that era.(lush forests and fields of grain crops, vast fish-filled lakes and canal systems for irrigation.Virtually a land of plenty)and see the waste land that inevitably resulted. It's virtually became a desert,as you mentioned through climate change and civil unrest.Mismanagement also likely played a big part. Some think that the arrival of Cortez may have also hastened their demise.
Whatever happened it was not a good idea to join the local soccer team!

Scott I agree with much of what you say. I can see that you strongly believe in it too.

Strong beliefs have caused both the best and worst things in this world.

I say believe what you want, and do what you want, as long as you dont screw up either people or planet along the way. Also - let others do the same too.

I like the mould I'm in.

Hi Mouldy Sea Dog,

I've never been against people and their ideals. I just find it difficult to fathom those hard core fanatics that cant accept that there may be a question mark over what they believe.Hell, everybody's religious belief's cant be right or wrong, can they!!
As you realise I have no real belief in God,my belief is in humanity that sooner or later we will realize we need a unified approach in order to enable the human race and the planet to survive.
Happy easter to you! (despite the fact I don't believe in it).

cheers Scott

With my first big ray caught on the weekend I have joined the ranks of verminators.

As per the fire use question a quick goole uncovered this:

So it looks like fire came with the first humans out of Africa.
