I took my partners 4yo daughter for a bit of crabbing on the weekend. When the first one came over the side, i was asked why dont crabs bleed and do they have hearts????:o :o

Anyway we were both sitting there stumped for an answer and its now been eating me for a couple of days.

Can anyone shed some light on this subject for me?????

Insects dont have blood as such, maybe crabs are the same.

they do bleed, its clear. i a leg gets broken, they can bleed to death. if they throw a leg or claw it covers instantly. if you put ya finger over broken area yu can stop em bleeding.

Thats really interesting lippa, never even heard that one. So it would be fair to say that they have a heart too???

Would the same go for other crustaceans like prawns etc????

Cheers

You can Google anything
A crab's circulatory system is fairly simple and is classified as an open circulatory
system. The circulatory system is the primary way of transporting oxygen, carbon dioxide, waste products, and food to and from its cells.
The circulatory system consists of a singlechambered heart, sinuses (openings or space
around organs), arteries, and blood (called hemolymph). The hemolymph has a bluish
tinge due to the presence of hemocyanin, a blood pigment that contains copper.
Comparatively, human blood has the element iron bound to hemoglobin that serves to carry oxygen in the circulatory system. A crab's heart is located dorsally in the center of the carapace and is suspended under the surface of the carapace by strands of connective tissue. Humans and other vertebrates have a closed circulatory system, where blood is confined to vessels, and does not mix freely with other fluids in the body. Crabs have an open circulatory system, which means that the hemolymph circulates throughout the body and bathes the internal organs directly. The organs are surrounded by sinuses and when the animal moves, the sinuses contract and aid in circulating the hemolymph throughout the heart and body. When the heart
relaxes, hemolymph is drawn in through valved openings called ostia (ah'stee-uh), which close as the heart contracts and pumps out the hemolymph.

That's all good information - here's the explanation for 4 year olds (and slightly older ones too). Crabs (and all crustaceans - and insects too for that matter) don't have arteries, veins and capillaries like we do. Instead their blood system forms the body cavity and their organs lie in blood and are 'bathed' in it as it moves. The heart is a dorsal (upper) tube which pumps the blood forward to the head region and it seeps backward through the body, between the organs, as the animal moves. As mentioned it is blue because the respiratory pigment contains copper (not iron as ours does(haemoglobin)). It clots readily and you'll often see it as a (very pale) blue jelly in a container in which you've held the live crabs. Since crabs are able to shed a leg to escape a predator (and grow it back next time they moult) they don't bleed much because the opening is automatically closed when the leg is shed. This is also why it's common to find crabs with claws of different sizes -the smaller one being a regrown claw

By the Geeeezzzz I always get amazed at this site.
So much info at hand and at the push of a button.
I never really thought so many pulminary and cardio vascular surgeons and specialists would be memebers of this site let alone give their educated opinions so readily and free. LOL
Well done guys.
Zigfreed I would stick with the rabbit story - If you dont she may ask what is/are:-
Heamoglobin, arteries, capillaries, veins, hemolymph and so on.
How would you go there?
Cheers and the guys are right a most interesting question.
Good luck and Cheers

Here's another piece of useless info...

And bird poop isn't poop it's called guano (if my uni days remember OK).
The white stuff is the urea or piddle and the black stuff is..well you know what. :)

Yep, hemolymph same as insects so they dont actually bleed as such.

Why do crabs go red immediately that they hit the hot water?

Chezzy13

Cooked, if you burn yourself on fire or hot water you go red on the skin in the affected area, where its burnt.

Why do crabs go red immediately that they hit the hot water?
Because the protein chains in the shell have been chemically altered.
Same reason that an egg goes white when you cook it.
That's simply put but if you want a detailed description of why and fancy names then I'd have to get my uni notes out.

birds and saurian reptiles excrete uric acid not urea - they are chemically different although derived from the same sub-compounds - urea is excreted by the other high order animals (ourselves included).

Both forms are a evolutionary method of passing the particulary nasty form of nitrogenous waste (the result of metabolism) called ammonia - most aquatic/marine animals excrete ammonia.

Birds and their lizardy relations excrete uric acid instead of urea. Uric acid by its chemical nature enables the animal to conserve water. Uric acid (the pee component of bird crap) turns white in contact with air - the black stuff is fecal matter (food remnants, bacteria and old gut skin cells).

this is a cool thread ...

ps when is the Bras 'n Things catalogue due - must be soon with the change of seasons and all :o

A little more info for your own personal files,
A Cuttlefish has three hearts and its blood is also copper based, so the cuttlefish's blood is coloured green. They are also excelent to eat.

And now for some more off-topic stuff.......

What are the full character names of all the Gilligan's Island crew.
(Thanks for prompting this question Gilligan)

Some you will know off the top of your head, others...................probably not.

Two of the names were only mentioned once.

One was never mentioned. (on the show)
