Guys,

I am after a second hand epirb to get out to some close in reefs but don't want hassles from the johnny hoppers as they are more than 2 miles off.

At the moment I don't have $470ish lying around for one of the new ones and if I got in trouble I would stay under anchor and use my mobile or radio anyway as I am so close. So please no lectures from Mr Safety conscious.

If anybody has one lying round just to get me outside (a little) with some currency left on the battery give me a PM please.

Hi

The analogue EPIRBs are being phased out and will be useless after 2010 when the new digital system comes in.

Batteries on EPIRBs are stamped with an end of life date wherebye you must replace the battery at a cost of just over $100.

I have seen second hand units on EBAY for $150 (depends on battery life).

They will reduce to $0 as we approach 2010

Hi Mooks,

I don't know if these are in your budget - I've got the personal one as I'm rarely "offshore", so I just wanted the smallest one for the boat. Whitworths also deliver, so it might be an option - certainly a lot cheaper then $450 - $500.

Good luck,

I've got one of the older ones that you can have for $50...tested the battery just yesterday 31/12.I got it with my boat in 2003-2004.Should have good battery left??...at your risk.Reason for selling - just had my new one arrive from Whitworths yesterday...nice when you suddenly have the $$ handy!;D Not sure about postage regs but it could be sent in a prepaid satchel for around $10.I live in sunny, windy VIC.

G'day folks,Sorry for taking so long to reply.I've still got the EPIRB and it's a Pains Wessex RES-Q-SAT.When I said that I got it when I bought my boat I should've stated that it was secondhand. The date on the unit to replace the battery is 2002 and I'm not sure if the previous owner had replaced the battery. What I do know is that when I test it the light comes on so as to the life left in it I don't know....could be a few months...maybe a couple of years?Would give someone the leeway to perhaps save their bucks for the changeover to 406 time.Just let me know via pm.

Thanks,Darren
