In response to my request outboard wanted I have been offered 2 outboards. My hull is a hydrofield 5m centrer console and is rated to 150 hp.
The motor i am replacing is a 50hp mariner 4 cylinder and will only just plane the boat with 2 up.
I have been offered a 115 hp 2003 model mariner 2 stroke and a 90 hp 2002 johno 2 stroke. they have both been dealer serviced every year and both under 500 hours.
Does anyone know of any problems with each motor that I should be aware of?
At this stage I am looking at the mariner as it has a bit more oomph and is $500 cheaper than the johno.
All responses appreciated.

Just one thing to consider is fuel economy don't know if it's important to you' but up to around 90 HP you will get 1litre of fuel to 1 statute mile.
Over 100HP they get quite thirsty, but I couldn't tell you exact figures.

The 90 is actually a 115 de-rated to 90 so it will have the go of the 115 but without the legs up top by a few kph.
Don't know what the mariner is? a rated or de-rated engine?
But first things first what is the compression of each and every cylinder of each engine, TOTALLY impossible to choose or consider an engine until you have that information, unless you already do.

Mariner had compression readings on service reciept from memory they were 140 but were definately even on all cylinders. Wont be able to get johno ones today .

That makes one engine in the running, will the 90s compression be taken by the same dealer with the same guage? 140 is nice and high as well as being the same in all pots if accurate it's a nice combination, I from experience find it hard to believe perfectly level readings but some motors do have perfectly level compression, it just raises an eyebrow is all.

with an option it is hard not to go for the bigger motor. and as for fuel I had a 90hp 2/s on my current boat and now have a 140hp 2/s and I dont seem to use any more fuel unless I am pushing it hard. and I am getting there faster

the bigger the better but you will pay more for running costs
though if the 50 couldnt get you on the plan with 2 the fuel economy would of been quite poor
115 to 90 either would be quite adequate depends on the better motor really
if all being fair and equal i lean towards the 115

Update
I have decided on mariner for a couple of reasons. The johno seemed to be knocked about more than mariner and there was 15lb variation in compression readings 115- 130 whilst mariner was 135 - 140 admiddily with different compression gauges.
The johno did not come with remote and cables.
The only downside with the mariner is that it is an ultra long shaft and I am having to have a mounting plate manufactured to adapt my transom.
I took this option rather than removing the spacer plate from the trunk and cutting and welding the drive shaft.
Getting the work done by the new owner Michael at Coorparoo marine who seems very knowledgeable and competent. The plate is due today and motor should be fitted tomorrow.

I've fouind a slightly bigger Hp working easier at the same speed can give better or the same ecconomy than a smaller unit running harder.
The 115 mariner are a good inline 4 donk and theres plenty are about.
PM me as I may have some serive info you can have for future use

Go the 115 .....more horsepower but drive it carefully and you should get better fuel economy than the 90.....i had a 5.3 open dingy with a 75 tiller yamaha...i now own a 6m plate boat with a 200 mercury...better economy overall from the mercury...believe it or not....

not too sure about getting better fuel economy from a 200HP over a 75HP.

I travel 50 Nm to go fishing carrying approx 500 kg....my 75 burnt 80 to 100 liters per trip because it was running near flat out to get anywhere....the new rig (200) burns on average 75 liters....so work that out ...??? !!!!!!!
You dont have to be smart to work out that the little yammie was working its guts out as where the 200 is running at 3700 revs doing 28 knots.....where as the 75 was doing 25 knots flat strap.....
