Hi Guys

I have had a 4.1 meter Ally Craft and for the last ten or so years it has had a 20HP merc on the back(Second hand). My top speed has been about 17-18 knots and it trolled at about 2 knots.

So, my engine died and I am waiting for a new Yamaha 30HP to be fitted. Now I never knew if the top/low speeds for the Mercury were good, bad or indifferent and I wonder what the new 30HP yammaha will do?

The salesman's answer to a top speed was "It will fly" but that's as close as he would commit to.

What is its lowest trolling speed? "Er - good. You will be happy"

Now as a freshwater fisherman these are the two most important questions - The rest I don't care much about. I presume it will start and I preume it will not break down.

Antbody know what top speed I should expect and will it troll at below 2 knots?

I am not a hoon, I just want to know what to expect ie What speed is flying?.

I would expect that you will definitely expect an increase in WOT speed. The slow trolling speed may also increase to say three knotts but if you have a trim or tilt facility this speed may be reduced by trimming the motor out from the boat.

G'day

I'm prepared to say your top speed will increase to about 24kts.

Hi Chris

I hope you are wrong - 3 knots would be terrible! I will have to hang a bucket over the side or the Bass will not be able to catch me...

Hi Dave

A boat similar to mine was tested and got 23knots according to the report with a 25 HP.

I just wonder if I also get 23 knots am I being short changed?

Woudn't you think there would be a chart in the specs of the engine for different boats?

Got a 4.1 Quinny with a 40Yamme. Yeah the top speed is up there but the real nice feeling is being dead in the water and giving it full noise for a sec or two before pulling it back to half throtle on the plane doing 30+ knots...just jumps out of a hole...rarely stay at full noise...too scary...G

4 KPH is 2.16knots - only a bit too fast and 42kmh is 22.7 knots which is ok with a full boat.

I understand there are ways to slow down the trolling speed but as yet don't know how.

sounds like a trial and error test comming up wrip109
can always decrease the prop pitch but youll lose top speed

I wonder what will happen if I change the tilt to a different position? It is a manual tilt and seems to be set with a pin that pulls in and out of some holes.

Top speed does not matter in the dams- I would rather get to my fishing spot slower but catch fish; getting there ar 35 knots isn't much good if I catch nothing.

A trolling plate might be the answer...

I have a 3.9 stacer with 25 merc on it. The only way I can gauge it's speed is when I follow the deckie in the Whittley when we go camping at the Pin. I carry the kids and she carries all the camping gear in the Stacer. I'm doing 30 knots so keeping my distance, she's doing the same and she swears she's not running it at full throttle..............if you saw the gear she was carrying you'd wonder how it even got on the plane:o;D She has the tilt set one hole out.
