South East Queensland Freshwater Catch and Release Results 2002
The seventh annual South East Queensland Freshwater Catch and Release was held at Boondooma Dam and the results speak for themselves to claim this as one of the best impoundments to fish. Anglers travelled from Cairns in the north to Grafton in the south and they were not disappointed in the camaraderie or the quality of the fishing to be had.
On Thursday evening a short and concise briefing was held followed by a display and talk by Mossops Tackle on the use of soft plastics, and judging by crowd around the table was a big hit. Anglers were also treated to a first class barbeque and with a few ales and the meeting of some old mates and the meeting of some new it was soon late and competitors called it a night late for a early start.
Anglers arose to the first day with pouring rain not a great start at all however the hardy still hit the water around 4.30 am. As for our team we opted for a couple of hours and after a bit of organising at the venue site we hit the water after 8 am. By this time the conditions were improving and we ended up with a hot, slightly cloudy sky and a bit of wind on and off. As for the fishing that day well this was unreal to say the least and by days end anglers had caught and released 1016 fish. A huge effort indeed and all teams secured a spot on the board with the top three teams being Team Evakool, Wild Marine and Brisbane Valley Anglers with only a couple of hundred points between the next 7 teams so it was close to make the top five.
The camaraderie around the venue Friday evening was electric with anglers giving full account of a fantastic day on the water and the many monsters that got away. The top three anglers Matthew Mott, Wayne Blundell and Roy Souter gave a brief to all competitors on how and where they were catching their fish which was welcomed by all.
Current leaders for the day for the Longest Bass and Golden Perch were Warren Morgenstern with a bass of 520 mm and Brian Harvey with a 520 mm Golden Perch which as it turned out both retained the title by competition end.
The second day had our team with a better start finding us on the water by 5 am with a total contrast to day 1 with overcast skies greeting us and rain during the day which kept only the keen (mad) out on the water. Once again Boondooma Dam showed what it has to offer anglers with anglers managing 1078 fish for the day. This was a huge effort giving the conditions we fished under.
Saturday evening anglers were well catered for with a spit roast and the music from Boil the Billy Bush and Song Dance, a great way to round off a top day on the water. To witness the rendition of the Aussie version of the New Zealand haka, had to be seen to be believed. The entertainment by a few competitors just made the evening worthwhile and once again a few hardy souls ensured a late night was had. As for the placing’s no real change other than team Wild Marine secured first place on the leader board with the remainder of the field juggled for position. As for our team we still remained in the top ten.
Sunday and the final day the finishing placing’s were up for grabs and the competitors gave it the all and by close of fishing a further 294 fish had been measured for the competition.
Overall the event was a huge success both from and organisational point and most importantly the feed back we have received to date by anglers in the quality of the fishing to be had at this impoundment not to mention the social atmosphere generated around the event. The catering was again of a high standard and was welcomed by anglers at each days end.
